This position requires sound aeronautical decision-making, effective communication, and compliance with FAA regulations, college policies, and program safety procedures. GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE FUNCTION
The Part-Time Flight Instructor provides safe, effective, and professional flight, ground, simulator, and aviation training-device instruction to students enrolled in the Hinds Community College Commercial Aviation Program.
The instructor evaluates student progress, maintains accurate training records, promotes sound aeronautical decision-making, and ensures that all assigned instruction is conducted in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations, Hinds Community College policies, and Commercial Aviation Program procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required Qualifications

• Experience providing flight or ground instruction in accordance with applicable FAA regulations.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate technical aviation information clearly and effectively.
• Demonstrated ability to work professionally with students possessing different experience levels, educational backgrounds, and learning needs.
• Ability to use training records, aircraft scheduling systems, learning-management systems, and standard office technology.
• Ability to work effectively with other flight instructors, faculty members, staff, maintenance personnel, and aviation program leadership.
• Ability to maintain accurate, complete, and timely student training records.

REQUIRED FAA CERTIFICATES, RATINGS, AND QUALIFICATIONS
The applicant must possess and maintain the following:

• FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with Airplane Single-Engine Land and Instrument-Airplane ratings.
• FAA Flight Instructor Certificate with an Airplane Single-Engine rating.
• FAA Flight Instructor Certificate with an Instrument-Airplane rating.
• FAA medical certification sufficient to exercise the privileges required by the assigned duties.
• Applicable pilot and flight-instructor currency, recent-experience, and qualification requirements.
• Eligibility to operate and provide instruction in aircraft and aviation training devices assigned by Hinds Community College.
• Ability to satisfy applicable Hinds Community College aircraft checkout, standardization, insurance, and operational requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
• FAA Multi-Engine Instructor rating.
• FAA Advanced Ground Instructor or Instrument Ground Instructor Certificate.
• At least 300 hours of total flight time.
• At least 100 hours of flight instruction given.
• Experience in a college, university, military, or structured professional flight-training program.
• Experience providing instruction in technically advanced aircraft.
• Experience providing instruction in aircraft equipped with glass-cockpit avionics.
• Experience with student stage checks, progress evaluations, or instructor standardization activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provide safe and effective flight, ground, simulator, and aviation training-device instruction in accordance with 14 CFR Part 61, applicable FAA guidance, Hinds Community College policies, and Commercial Aviation Program procedures.
• Conduct preflight and postflight briefings and provide students with timely, constructive, and documented feedback.
• Prepare students for FAA knowledge tests, practical tests, stage checks, proficiency evaluations, and other program requirements.
• Teach aeronautical knowledge, flight procedures, aircraft systems, risk management, aeronautical decision-making, and professional airmanship.
• Evaluate student knowledge, flight proficiency, judgment, risk management, and progress toward course and FAA certification requirements.
• Develop individualized training recommendations or corrective-action plans for students who are not progressing according to established expectations.
• Maintain complete, accurate, and timely student flight, ground, simulator, endorsement, and progress records.
• Review assigned student records for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with FAA regulations and Commercial Aviation Program requirements.
• Ensure that all required endorsements are issued accurately and only when the student has met the applicable regulatory and program requirements.
• Verify aircraft status, weather conditions, airport conditions, aircraft performance, weight and balance, fuel requirements, and other operational considerations before flight.
• Exercise appropriate aeronautical decision-making and cancel, delay, divert, or discontinue training when conditions create an unacceptable level of risk.
• Follow established aircraft dispatch, scheduling, key-control, fueling, and postflight procedures.
• Promote and participate in the Commercial Aviation Program's safety reporting and risk-management processes.
• Promptly report aircraft discrepancies, incidents, hazards, student concerns, and operational issues through established procedures.
• Communicate regularly with assigned students regarding schedules, preparation requirements, progress, training concerns, and program expectations.
• Coordinate with aviation staff regarding aircraft scheduling, maintenance status, instructor availability, student assignments, and training priorities.
• Assist students in developing effective study habits, preparation practices, and professional aviation behaviors.
• Participate in required instructor meetings, standardization training, safety meetings, recurrent training, and professional-development activities.
• Maintain all certificates, ratings, medical qualifications, currency, and training requirements necessary to perform assigned duties.
• Comply with Hinds Community College policies concerning student privacy, nondiscrimination, safety, conduct, and use of college resources.
• Maintain professional conduct and model the safety culture, work ethic, integrity, and airmanship expected of Hinds Community College aviation students and employees.
• Support student recruitment, orientation, aviation outreach, or program events when requested and available.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not normally have formal supervisory responsibilities.
The Part-Time Flight Instructor is responsible for the direct supervision and safety of assigned students during flight, ground, simulator, and aviation training-device activities.
The instructor may also be asked to:

• Assist with student orientation and on-boarding.
• Provide peer support to other instructors.
• Participate in instructor standardization activities.
• Assist with student progress reviews or stage checks when qualified and assigned.
• Report student-progress, instructional, operational, or safety concerns to the District Director of Aviation or designee.

SCHEDULE AND AVAILABILITY
The work schedule is based on student-training needs, aircraft availability, weather, maintenance, and program operations.
The employee may be required to:

• Work mornings, afternoons, evenings, or weekends.
• Adjust scheduled activities because of weather, aircraft maintenance, student availability, or other operational conditions.
• Attend required meetings, standardization sessions, and training activities.
• Communicate availability accurately and provide timely notice of schedule changes.
• Maintain dependable attendance for accepted instructional assignments.

Flight and ground instructional hours are not guaranteed and may vary based on enrollment, student progress, aircraft availability, weather, maintenance, and program needs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described below represent those that an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of the position.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be required to:

• Sit for extended periods in an aircraft cockpit, classroom, office, simulator, or aviation training device.
• Enter and exit small training aircraft.
• Stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, reach, and climb as necessary to conduct aircraft inspections and instructional duties.
• Use hands and feet to operate aircraft controls and instructional equipment.
• Read aircraft instruments, electronic displays, charts, checklists, training records, and exterior visual references.
• Hear and understand radio communications, student communications, warning signals, and aircraft sounds, with or without appropriate assistive equipment.
• Work in confined cockpit environments.
• Lift, carry, push, or move instructional equipment and aircraft-related items consistent with requirements established by Hinds Community College.
• Safely perform preflight inspections and other duties around operating aircraft, propellers, vehicles, and airport movement areas.
• Use hands and fingers to handle or operate objects, tools, aircraft controls, and instructional equipment.
• Reach with hands and arms and communicate effectively by speaking and hearing.
• Occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this position may include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color recognition, and the ability to adjust focus, consistent with applicable FAA medical and operational requirements.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The employee regularly works in aircraft, classrooms, offices, hangars, airport ramps, and other aviation environments.
Work may occur indoors and outdoors and may involve:

• Aircraft and airport noise.
• Operating aircraft, propellers, ground vehicles, and airport equipment.
• Heat, cold, wind, rain, sunlight, and changing weather conditions.
• Fuel, oil, exhaust, cleaning products, and other substances normally encountered in general aviation operations.
• Confined aircraft cockpit environments.
• Irregular schedules and schedule changes resulting from weather, maintenance, student availability, or operational conditions.
• Travel to off-site airports or aviation facilities.
• Exposure to active airport ramps, taxiways, hangars, and aircraft movement areas.

The employee must comply with all applicable safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment.
