What does an IT help desk intern do?

An IT help desk intern assists with troubleshooting technical issues, providing support for hardware, software, and network problems. They often respond to user inquiries, document issues, and may gain experience using ticketing systems and remote support tools under supervision.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Helpdesk Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Helpdesk Intern, you need a basic understanding of computer hardware, software troubleshooting, and customer service principles, often supported by coursework in IT or related fields. Familiarity with ticketing systems like ServiceNow or Zendesk and knowledge of common operating systems (Windows, macOS) are typically required. Strong communication, patience, and problem-solving skills help you effectively assist users and collaborate with team members. These skills ensure efficient technical support, positive user experiences, and a smooth workflow within IT environments.

What types of technical issues do Helpdesk Interns typically handle, and how is support prioritized?

Helpdesk Interns usually address a wide range of technical issues, from password resets and software troubleshooting to basic hardware support and network connectivity problems. Support requests are often prioritized based on urgency and impact; for example, issues affecting multiple users or critical business functions are handled first. Interns work closely with more experienced technicians, escalating complex problems as needed, which provides valuable learning opportunities and exposure to various IT systems. This environment helps interns develop problem-solving skills and gain hands-on experience with commonly used support tools and ticketing systems.

Is $30 an hour good for an internship?

For a Helpdesk Intern, $30 an hour is considered above average, as most internships in this field typically pay between minimum wage and $20 per hour. Higher pay may reflect specialized skills, certifications, or a more experienced role, but it is relatively high for an internship position. Internships often focus on training and experience, so pay rates can vary widely based on location and company policies.

Is 22 too old for an internship?

Helpdesk internships are typically open to candidates of various ages, including those in their early twenties. Age is generally not a barrier, and employers often value relevant skills, such as troubleshooting and customer service, over age when considering applicants for entry-level roles.

Is AI replacing IT's help desk?

AI is increasingly used to automate routine help desk tasks such as password resets and troubleshooting, but it does not fully replace helpdesk roles like Helpdesk Interns. Human support remains essential for complex issues, customer interaction, and problem-solving that require critical thinking and empathy. Helpdesk professionals often work alongside AI tools to improve efficiency and service quality.

Job Description:

Help empower new students to become active participants in our democracy! The Center for Engaged Learning is recruiting a summer intern to assist with nonpartisan voter registration, voter education, and student outreach during summer orientation and Opening Day.

The selected intern(s) will staff the Mercer Votes table during summer orientation resource fairs, scheduled from 1:15-4:15 p.m. in Heritage Hall. Interns will help welcome incoming students and families, share nonpartisan voter registration and voting resources, encourage students to make a voting plan, and connect students with Mercer Votes opportunities for continued engagement.

In addition to summer orientation support, the intern(s) will assist with data collection and outreach tracking to help Mercer Votes evaluate the reach and effectiveness of its efforts. Responsibilities may include tracking student interactions, recording pledge-to-vote or voter registration interest, organizing sign-up information, and helping tosummarize key takeaways from outreach events.

Intern(s) may also support Mercer Votes tabling during Opening Day, Mercer's first-year student move-in experience, by helping distribute voting information, answering basic questions, and encouraging new students to begin their Mercer experience with a commitment to civic participation. All work will be strictly nonpartisan and focused on reducing barriers to student voter registration, education, and turnout.
