Job description

Library Team Member

The Dover Public Library is seeking a new team member! We are looking for someone who is reliable, personable, has excellent customer service skills, and enjoys books and reading. This person will be trained to work in both the Children's Room and in the Adult section of the library, so should feel comfortable helping people of all ages and backgrounds. Basic computer experience and helping patrons with printing is a plus. The hours for this position are in the Children's Room Mondays 5:00-8:30pm and every other Saturday, averaging 7.5 hours per week. Flexibility to fill in and cover other shifts for vacations or illness in both the Children's and Adult sections is necessary.

$18.86 to $27.23 per hour. 7.5 hours per week. Position is open until filled.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Check library materials in and out, and handles renewals and holds; re-shelves certain library materials such as new books, videos, and materials in special displays.
  • Register new borrowers ages 5-12 and teachers with special borrowing privileges and gives them an introduction to the Children's Room and its policies, procedures and services.
  • Explain library rules and procedures to children and adult patrons, especially those established policies and programming guidelines pertinent to the operation of the Children's Room.
  • Answer questions provide advisory services, advanced online searching techniques and resources; answer directional questions and provide guidance in the organization and location of materials in the Children's Room.
  • Assists patrons with technology and internet services; assist with social media and devices such as e-readers, tablets, and smart phones ; schedules museum passes and the Internet workstation.
  • Help maintain the attractive appearance of the room and is alert to possible threats to the safety and wellbeing of patrons, especially young children.
  • Develop new ongoing programs such as book groups and STEM programs.
  • Purchase new materials for the collection and remove outdated materials as assigned.
  • Participate in outreach programs in local schools.
  • Prepare bulletin boards displays and promotional materials including the use of social media; design and create posters, summer reading booklets, murals, paintings, etc.
  • Prepare and perform story times and other ongoing programs.
  • Assist in planning and execution of special programs for children; assist in preparation of reading lists and in checking of standard tools such as the Children's Catalog.
  • Attend conferences and participate in professional development, webinars, and courses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skill and Ability Requirements:

Demonstrated ability to read and write basic English. Working knowledge of English spelling and grammar. General knowledge of computer hardware and software and familiarity with online searching. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, ability to follow through on assignments accurately. Considerable experience in public contact or public service work. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, the general public, other City departments and personnel, and the ability to deal with service problems courteously and tactfully. Public Library experience helpful. Background in early childhood development or education. Good working knowledge of and interest in children's literature and authors. Familiarity with popular Internet sites structured for use by children. Artistic ability and creative crafts experience helpful. Experience with an automated circulation system and knowledge of Windows and MS Office desirable. Experience with social media platforms and devices such as e-readers, tablets, and smart phones.

Education/Licensure/Certification Requirements: High school diploma required, as well as an avid interest in books, reading, and information technology. Previous library experience highly desirable. College degree preferred.
