What is healthcare transformation?

Healthcare transformation refers to the comprehensive process of improving the way healthcare is delivered, managed, and financed. This can include adopting new technologies, redesigning care models, focusing on patient-centered care, and implementing value-based approaches to improve outcomes and reduce costs. The goal is to create a more efficient, effective, and equitable healthcare system that better meets the needs of patients and providers. Healthcare transformation often involves collaboration among healthcare organizations, payers, policymakers, and technology partners.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in healthcare transformation roles?

Professionals in healthcare transformation often encounter challenges such as navigating complex regulatory environments, driving organizational change amidst resistance, and ensuring new processes align with both patient care goals and operational efficiency. Collaborating across multidisciplinary teams—including clinicians, administrators, and IT professionals—requires strong communication and adaptability. General Management Consultant for Federal Healthcare System
Voyage Advisory | Remote (U.S.) with up to 10% travel to Washington D.C.
Engagement Type: W2
Compensation: Market-competitive, based on experience
About the Role
The Consultant supports VHA's mission to plan, engineer, and implement enterprise healthcare transformation initiatives aligned with the VA Secretary and Undersecretary's priorities. The consultant collaborates across VHA program offices and field operations to define shared goals, manage competing priorities, and deliver integrated solutions within optimized platforms of care delivery.
This role requires an agile approach to leading multiple, concurrent initiatives aligned with priorities that evolve in response to the needs of VHA and Veterans. Much of the work is complex, fast-moving, and ambiguous, frequently driven by emerging healthcare priorities, policy changes, and Presidential or Congressional mandates.
Voyage Advisory provides Federal and commercial customers with solutions in many arenas. Our customers face wide-ranging challenges in the fields of national security, health care, finance, insurance, manufacturing, utilities, and information technology. To address these challenges, we employ intelligent and committed consultants who take care of our customers' success as if it is their own.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to client leadership and VHA stakeholders, providing practical, mission-focused support
  • Plan, manage, and execute enterprise-level healthcare transformation initiatives from concept through implementation
  • Lead and contribute to multiple concurrent projects, rapidly establishing structure, scope, and execution plans
  • Coordinate across VHA program offices, field operations, and external partners to align goals, manage dependencies, and drive decisions
  • Apply program management, industrial engineering, and healthcare systems engineering principles to design safe, comprehensive, and efficient solutions
  • Deliver enterprise program and project management services, often driven by legislation, policy changes, and executive direction
  • Identify and manage risks, resource constraints, and budget considerations across competing priorities
  • Produce high-quality, executive-ready deliverables that inform decisions and advance mission outcomes
  • Adapt quickly as priorities shift, providing concierge-level support to leadership and program teams

Qualifications
  • 3 to 8 years of experience in management consulting, healthcare transformation, or federal health programs
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred
  • Preferred certifications include PMP, Prosci, Lean, and Human-Centered Design, or similar
  • MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams) at an advanced level
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Veterans Health Administration or federal healthcare initiatives strongly preferred
  • Strong program and project management capability with experience leading complex, multi-stakeholder efforts
  • Ability to synthesize complex information into clear, actionable recommendations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including comfort engaging senior government leaders
  • Highly organized, systematic, and proactive with strong follow-through
  • A roll up your sleeves doer who delivers without needing constant direction
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Strong customer service acumen
  • Trusted executive-level advisory expertise
  • Coordinate across VHA program offices, field operations, and executive leadership
  • Facilitate stakeholder alignment and consensus building
  • Produce high-quality briefings, decision papers, and presentations for senior leaders
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
