Job Summary and QualificationsFull Time – Overnights (7 on & 7 off)
Wesley Healthcare is a 760 bed tertiary teaching facility in Wichita, KS. Our facility includes a Level 1 trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, internal Children's Hospital, multiple free-standing emergency departments, and many other specialty and subspecialty services. It is a teaching site for the University of Kansas medical and pharmacy students, as well as a primary teaching site for nursing students from the Galen College of Nursing. The hospital is seeking a motivated, inpatient Clinical Pharmacy Specialist to provide clinical pharmacy services to both the ICUs and Emergency Department. This Critical Care and Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacy Specialist is responsible for the provision of comprehensive clinical pharmacy services for the entire facility on overnights. This individual serves as a resource for participating in nightly interdisciplinary clinical rounds, serving as primary for emergency responses including but not limited to codes, Level 1 traumas, massive blood transfusions, and Level 1 strokes. Additionally, clinical duties will entail providing pharmacotherapeutic and pharmacokinetic consults under department policies, providing patient education, and clinical evaluation of critically ill patients.
Job Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates the ability to adapt technique/treatment to age of population served, including newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, while providing care/service with respect to cultural differences and spiritual needs.
- Interprets medication orders (verbal and written) and transcribes to computerized patient medication profiles, timely and accurately. Maintains accurate, complete patient medication profiles
- Delivers clinical, patient problem-based care according to the standards defined within the American Society of Health-System Pharmacist (ASHP) and American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Standards
- Oversees, coordinates, or performs activities associated with potential exposure to hazardous drugs/cytotoxic drugs
- Acquires and maintains current knowledge in pharmacy practice to promote optimal patient outcomes
- Contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues, and others by serving as a preceptor for staff, students, residents and other medical professionals
- Decisions and actions on behalf of patients are made as a patient advocate
- Collaborates with the patient, significant other, and healthcare providers in providing patient care
- Considers factors relating to safety, effectiveness, and cost in evaluating, planning and delivering patients care
- Supports and promotes the organization's safety and risk management programs
- Complies with hospital and department policies and procedures, state/federal laws, regulations promulgated by the government or other third parties, TJC and ASHP standards
- Takes a leadership role within the pharmacy department and hospital, and advances pharmacy practice and patient care services within critical care
- Evaluates drug therapy orders for appropriateness of dosage, route, interval, schedule, and duration throughout patients hospital course; makes recommendations for change when appropriate
- Timely and effective management of orders assigned to your challenge queue

- Appropriately documents clinical care via progress notes on a daily basis
- Completes assignments accurately and on time
- Takes initiative in identifying ways that drug costs can be minimized through appropriate use of drugs within specialty area (expectation of completing at least two such projects annually)
- Provides didactic lectures/presentations to healthcare professionals such as pharmacists, physicians, residents and nurses within area of specialty (expectation of one didactic lecture for clinical staff pharmacists, nursing, or physician group per year and one didactic presentation on pharmacotherapeutics quarterly for residents and medical students rotating through the MICU)
- Grows and maintains professional relationship with at least four key physicians within area of specialty
- Actively serves as mentor and preceptor for clinical staff pharmacists, pharmacy students, and pharmacy residents through example, training, and education
- Conducts planned, written, and systematic evaluation of patient care-related issue or problem; produces program change to improve patient care (expectation of one such evaluation annually)
- Develops pre-printed orders and/or pathways in conjunction with adult critical care intensivist staff physicians that optimize pharmacotherapy management of adult critical care patients (expectation of at least two such order sets annually)
- Conducts and/or participates actively in the departments medication use evaluation (MUE) program (expectation is to lead at least one such MUE annually)
- Takes initiative to develop, implement, and monitor programs that improve the quality of care provided to patients (expectation of one such program annually)
- Performs all other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Required Registration, Licensure or Certification:
- Current licensure as a Registered Pharmacist in the State of Kansas
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) verification course through American Heart Assoc. or American Red Cross – Healthcare Provider CPR
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) verification course through American Heart Assoc. or American Red Cross within 180 days of hire
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) verification course through American Heart Assoc. or American Red Cross within 180 days of hire
Preferred Registration, Licensure or Certification:
- Board Certified Critical Care Pharmacist or other recognized specialty practice area
- Registered as a preceptor with the Kansas Board of Pharmacy
Required Education or Experience:
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD)
- Pharmacy residency (PGY1) plus 1 year of ICU experience or Pharmacy residency (PGY1) plus Specialty residency training (PGY2) or 5 years of ICU experience
Preferred Education or Experience:
- Specialty residency training (PGY2)
- Specialty fellowship training
- At least 3 years of ICU clinical experience
Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
- Knowledge of State and Federal laws, TJC, and professional practice standards
