What can you do with healthcare informatics?
What degree is needed for healthcare informatics?
What is the difference between Healthcare Informatics vs Medical Coding?
| Aspect | Healthcare Informatics | Medical Coding |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's or Master's in Health Informatics, certifications like CHI or CPHIMS | Certification such as CPC, CCS, or CCS-P; often requires coding certification |
| Work Environment | Hospitals, clinics, health IT companies, government agencies | Hospitals, physician offices, billing companies |
| Industry Usage | Designing and managing health information systems, data analysis | Translating medical records into standardized codes for billing |
Healthcare Informatics focuses on managing health information systems and data analysis, requiring advanced degrees and certifications. Medical Coding involves translating medical documentation into codes for billing, often requiring specific coding certifications. While both roles are vital in healthcare, they differ in scope, skills, and daily tasks, with Healthcare Informatics emphasizing system management and Medical Coding concentrating on documentation coding.

Job description
Mass General Brigham relies on a wide range of professionals, including doctors, nurses, business people, tech experts, researchers, and systems analysts to advance our mission. As a not-for-profit, we support patient care, research, teaching, and community service, striving to provide exceptional care. We believe that high-performing teams drive groundbreaking medical discoveries and invite all applicants to join us and experience what it means to be part of Mass General Brigham.
Job Summary
Overview StatementThe Division of General Internal Medicine and Primary Care, Department of Medicine at Mass General Brigham/Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS), invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in biomedical informatics and artificial intelligence (AI) in health care. The Division is nationally recognized for providing compassionate, high-quality care, pioneering innovative medical education, and conducting cutting-edge clinical and health services research.
We are seeking a highly motivated, diligent, and independent Research Fellow to join a dynamic research team supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This position focuses on advancing biomedical informatics research through the application of artificial intelligence (AI) methods to longitudinal electronic health record (EHR) data for disease phenotyping, risk factor identification, patient stratification, and predictive modeling across a range of disease domains, including Alzheimer's disease and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The successful candidate will design, develop, and evaluate innovative methods for data mining and analytics by leveraging biomedical terminologies and standards, comprehensive clinical knowledge bases, advanced natural language processing (NLP) and large language models (LLMs), and machine learning/deep learning techniques. The ultimate goals are to accelerate knowledge discovery, improve clinical decision-making, enhance patient safety, and elevate the quality of care.
The fellowship is based at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and Mass General Brigham, offering a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment at the forefront of health information technology research. Fellows will have the opportunity to engage in groundbreaking research, contribute to ongoing projects, and propose novel research initiatives with the potential to secure external funding. During the appointment period, Fellows will be strongly encouraged to publish their research findings in high-impact journals and present their work at national and international conferences.
This opportunity is ideal for individuals who are both independently driven and collaborative, thriving in a vibrant research environment alongside a large team of experienced faculty and staff. Fellows must be comfortable giving and receiving constructive feedback, incorporating insights to improve their work, and transparently sharing their ideas and decision-making processes. Recognizing and valuing the contributions of colleagues is essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively within a diverse, multidisciplinary team.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities will vary depending on the specific topic area in which the fellow works, but will generally include:
Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, clinicians, and data scientists to achieve project goals.
Participating in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of proposed system and methods.
Leading or contributing to the design and development of novel AI/informatics methods and applications.
Conducting data analysis and system evaluation.
Leading or contributing to manuscript preparation, writing, and submission to peer-reviewed journals.
Presenting research findings at national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
A PhD in biomedical informatics, computer science, information science, computational linguistics, statistics, data science, or a closely related field; or an MD/PharmD with demonstrated strength in biomedical informatics research.
Experience in biomedical informatics research; ability to plan and carry out research experiments and projects.
Candidates with experience in the areas of medical terminologies/ontologies, natural language processing/large language models, and machine/deep learning are strongly encouraged to apply.
Programming experience in computer programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, C#, SQL, R, etc).
Familiar with machine learning and statistical informatics methods.
Experience of analyzing healthcare data (e.g., EHR, claims) are desirable, but not required.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required
Programming skills in computer programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, or C) and experience in artificial intelligence model development.
Experience in machine learning and statistical methods.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to accept and adjust to feedback from supervisors.
Professionalism, respect, and regard for patient privacy.
Outstanding team player with the ability to thrive in a dynamic environment and adapt to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines.
Strong organizational skills and time management abilities.
