Position Summary
The Director of Health Informatics and Technology serves as a critical leader and hands-on expert within the University of Denver's Health and Counseling Center (HCC). This position blends strategic vision with operational execution, overseeing all technology systems that support the clinical, administrative, and compliance functions of the HCC. This position owns end-to-end execution of IT-related functions within the HCC.
This position summary is not designed to capture all activities, duties, or responsibilities required for this position. Responsibilities may change, or new ones may be assigned at any time.
Essential Functions
The Director provides direct support to clinical staff, ensuring timely resolution of technical issues, and leads the management of the electronic health record (EHR) system (Point and Click), server infrastructure, and security protocols. This role is responsible for developing and enforcing HIPAA-compliant IT policies, overseeing clinical coding and billing systems, and facilitating data-driven decision-making through reporting and performance analytics.
In addition to managing day-to-day IT operations, the Director partners with senior leadership to align technology strategies with the center's evolving needs-supporting a shift toward a more efficient, private-practice-style healthcare model. The Director works collaboratively across departments to implement third-party billing systems, enhance clinical workflows, and support university-wide wellness initiatives. The role also leads administration of the National College Health Assessment (NCHA) and contributes to the development of health promotion efforts based on student needs.
The ideal candidate is a versatile and proactive leader, equally skilled at strategic planning and front-line technical support, with deep knowledge of healthcare IT, compliance, and operations in a university or clinical setting.
Reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Health and Wellness and supervises the Associate Director of Information and Systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, preferably Point and Click or similar platforms.
- Understanding HIPAA compliance and healthcare IT security standards, with the ability to implement and maintain privacy and security protocols.
- Knowledge of healthcare IT infrastructure, including server management, backup systems, and patch management.
- Familiarity with coding standards (e.g., CPT, ICD-10) and documentation best practices, particularly in clinical settings.
- Understanding clinical billing processes and the role of third-party billing systems.
- Experience with student health surveys, including NCHA (National College Health Assessment) administration and data interpretation.
- Knowledge of healthcare technology trends and best practices for data-driven decision-making in healthcare.
Skills:
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to manage and mentor IT staff and other personnel.
- Problem-solving skills for troubleshooting technical issues across hardware, software, and clinical systems.
- Proficiency in developing and enforcing HIPAA-compliant IT policies and ensuring regular system audits for security compliance.
- Ability to oversee the administration of clinical coding systems, ensuring alignment with third-party billing requirements.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple concurrent projects in a dynamic, service-driven environment.

Abilities:

- Ability to develop and execute strategic technology plans that align with university health goals, while ensuring IT operations meet the center's evolving needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in information technology, Health Informatics, Computer Science, or related field.
- 5+ years of professional experience in IT system management, with at least 2 years in a healthcare or clinical environment.
- Demonstrated experience managing and supporting Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, preferably Point and Click or a comparable platform.
- Strong knowledge of HIPAA compliance, healthcare IT security standards, and related federal privacy regulations.
- Experience supervising IT personnel, with proven ability to provide mentorship and performance oversight.
- Proficiency in server administration, including backups, patch management, and security protocols.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software issues across clinical and administrative environments.
- Experience in managing coding systems and aligning clinical documentation with third-party billing requirements.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills, particularly in translating technical issues for non-technical audiences.
- Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced, service-driven environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Health Informatics, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
- Experience with Point and Click EHR specifically, including configuration, user training, and integration.
- Familiarity with coding standards (e.g., CPT, ICD-10) and best practices for documentation and audit-readiness in college health settings.
- Experience leading technology change initiatives or digital transformation projects in healthcare or university-based clinics.
- Knowledge of or experience with student health survey administration (e.g., NCHA) and using results to drive strategic health programming.

Working Environment
This position requires employees to work onsite 8:00am-5:00pm M-F with occasional evening, weekends, and holiday shifts. Staff are expected to support student Hallmark, Tradition and other program events throughout the year. The University of Denver and Student Affairs recognize the utilization of flexible work arrangements where these arrangements are operationally appropriate, and supervisor approved.
Standard office environment, unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high, noise level is quiet to moderate.
