How much do health informatics professor jobs pay per year?
What is a health informatics professor?
A Health Informatics Professor is an academic professional who teaches and conducts research in the field of health informatics. They educate students on topics like electronic health records, data analytics, and healthcare technology. Their work often involves developing curricula, publishing research, and collaborating with healthcare institutions to advance digital health innovations. Many also provide mentorship to students pursuing careers in health informatics.
What are some common responsibilities of a health informatics professor beyond classroom teaching?
In addition to delivering lectures and developing course materials, Health Informatics Professors often conduct original research in areas such as biomedical data analytics, health IT implementation, or healthcare data privacy. They also advise and mentor students, supervise graduate thesis work, and may help establish partnerships with healthcare organizations for student internships or collaborative projects. Professors in this field frequently participate in academic committees, contribute to curriculum design, and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals. These responsibilities help advance both the academic institution and the broader health informatics discipline.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a health informatics professor?
To thrive as a Health Informatics Professor, you need advanced knowledge of health informatics, data analytics, and healthcare systems, typically supported by a Ph.D. or doctorate in health informatics, biomedical informatics, or a related field. Competence in using health information systems (EHRs), statistical software (such as SAS, R, or SPSS), and familiarity with industry standards like HL7 or HIPAA is often required. Strong communication, mentorship, and critical thinking skills help in effective teaching, curriculum development, and research collaboration. These skills are vital for preparing students to address real-world healthcare challenges through informatics and for contributing to academic and industry advancements.

Job description
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The UTMB School of Health Professions invites applications for a full-time Master of Health Administration (MHA) Program Director at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor rank. We seek an accomplished academic leader to refine, validate, and operationalize a foundational program proposal into a fully accredited, elite MHA program. This individual will lead the translation of existing business plans into an active academic infrastructure and drive the program through the CAHME candidacy and initial accreditation phases.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Curriculum Validation & Operationalization: Translate existing programmatic proposals and business plans into a functional, CAHME-compliant academic program; validate and refine all proposed coursework against a formal, stakeholder-driven competency model.
- Accreditation Leadership: Serve as the primary author and strategist for the CAHME eligibility and candidacy applications; establish the data collection systems and frameworks required to prove the program meets initial accreditation standards.
- Network & Partnership Building: Establish foundational relationships with industry leaders, regional health systems, and the ACHE network to secure future residency, fellowship, capstone, and clinical education placements.
- Policy & Infrastructure Development: Finalize programmatic policies, admissions criteria, student handbooks, and public-facing informational materials compliant with both UTMB institutional rules and accreditor standards.
- Faculty Recruitment: Collaborate with leadership to identify, recruit, and onboard foundational core and adjunct faculty; establish standards for teaching excellence within the newly operationalized curriculum.
- Teaching & Scholarship: Deliver core graduate coursework within the MHA curriculum; maintain an active portfolio of scholarship and professional service commensurate with academic rank.
- Student Recruitment Support: Partner with enrollment marketing to promote the new program, evaluate inaugural applicant pools, and oversee initial student admissions and advising.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Doctoral degree (D.H.A., Ph.D., Dr.P.H., or equivalent) in health administration, public health, health policy, business administration, or a closely related field.
- Master's degree in health administration, public health, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare administration or higher education management.
- Demonstrated experience designing, launching, or significantly revising graduate-level curricula to align with programmatic accreditation standards (e.g., CAHME, CEPH, AACSB).
- Direct experience participating in or leading a programmatic self-study, candidacy process, or major accreditation review.
- Record of scholarly productivity and teaching effectiveness at the graduate level, commensurate with the applied academic rank.
- Deep operational knowledge of the US healthcare delivery system, health policy, and health informatics.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- FACHE (Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives) or equivalent professional certification.
- Proven track record of successfully securing initial CAHME accreditation for a new program.
- Prior experience as an MHA Program Director, Associate Director, or Director of Graduate Studies.
- Established executive-level network within Texas and national healthcare systems.
- Experience designing and executing hybrid or online graduate professional programs.
SALARY:
Commensurate with experience.
