Job description
WELCOME TO YOUR CENTER!
Established as a community non-profit in 1972, The Center provides targeted programs and services to the full diversity of the San Diego LGBTQ community. The mission of The Center is to enhance and sustain the health and well-being of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, transgender, nonbinary, immigrant, and HIV communities for the betterment of our entire San Diego region. Our vision is to create a Center and Center culture where every person feels and knows that they are welcomed, valued, and supported. As the beacon for our regional LGBTQ community, we actively recommit to being a more vibrant, bold, innovative, safe, and modern center each day than the day before. The Center is sex-positive and provides advocacy and critical health and social support services to support our community members through all stages of life, focusing on our deeply held values of equity, social justice, and client-centered, trauma-informed care. The Center currently has more than 100 staff working at 7 facilities across San Diego County.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the joint supervision and support of the Senior Director of Strategic Communications and Marketing and the Director of Advocacy and Civic Engagement, the Health Equity Program Coordinator will lead implementation of The Center's California Endowment-funded initiative to deepen its role as San Diego's regional LGBTQ+ health equity hub. This position sits at the intersection of Communications & Marketing and Community Organizing and requires someone equally comfortable producing polished public-facing content and building trust with grassroots partners, community leaders, and healthcare institutions. This individual will coordinate a multi-day regional healthcare convening bringing together grassroots organizations, Federally Qualified Health Centers, hospital systems, and LGBTQ+ community leaders to co-produce a nationally distributed toolkit and steward the partner relationships and community organizing work that translate community-defined health priorities into institutional practice change. This position requires strong communications skills, experience with community organizing and coalition-building, and a demonstrated commitment to LGBTQ+ health equity, including the needs of transgender and gender-expansive community members, LGBTQ+ older adults, and people living with HIV.
This is a Full-Time, Grant-Funded, Non-Exempt position, funded through an 18-month grant from The California Endowment, with continuation contingent on future funding.
PRIMARY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Regional Convening & Partner Relations
- Plan and coordinate all logistics for a multi-day regional healthcare convening for approximately 100 participants, including venue, travel, accessibility accommodations, ASL and Spanish interpretation, food, and materials.
- Cultivate and steward relationships with grassroots organizations, Federally Qualified Health Centers (including Family Health Centers of San Diego and San Ysidro Health), hospital systems, gender-affirming care providers, and advocates for older adults.
- Co-design convening programming with community members, including program tracks centering trans community leadership, the needs of aging LGBTQ+ adults, and long-term HIV survivors.
- Secure and monitor institutional commitments to specific, measurable practice changes made by healthcare partners at the convening.
Communications & Marketing
- With community members, co-develop and produce a publicly available national toolkit for planning and executing an LGBTQ+ regional healthcare convening.
- Write and design communications materials: web content, social media, email, and print that document and promote the health equity hub's work, in alignment with The Center's brand guidelines.
- Draft monthly impact stories and post-convening institutional reports for internal and external audiences.
- Manage the toolkit's promotion and national distribution.
- Support the broader Communications & Marketing team with storytelling, media relations, and digital content.
Organizing & Community Engagement
- Partner with The Center's Advocacy and Civic Engagement team and community coalitions to mobilize community members around the convening and its outcomes.
- Build and maintain relationships with coalition partners and grassroots organizations across San Diego County, with deliberate outreach to underserved regions including North County, East County, and South Bay.
- Support base-building and outreach so that community members most affected by health inequities including trans San Diegans, people living with HIV, and LGBTQ+ older adults are represented in convening planning and participation.
- Translate community-defined health priorities into concrete, actionable asks for institutional and healthcare partners.
Administration, Data & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of partner engagement, convening participation, and toolkit distribution in internal data systems.
- Administer pre- and post-convening surveys to measure change in participant health equity knowledge and institutional readiness.
- Draft narrative and programmatic reporting components for The California Endowment and other funders, in coordination with the Quality Assurance and Grants teams.
- Help lead sustainability planning and documentation of institutional partnerships to sustain the hub beyond the grant period.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Education and/or Experience:
- 2 or more years of experience in communications, marketing, community organizing, or program coordination, ideally within a nonprofit, public health, or LGBTQ-serving organization.
- Demonstrated experience planning and executing events, convenings, or large-scale meetings involving multiple external stakeholders.
- Professional Experience:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience creating content for digital, print, and LGBTQ+ audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including healthcare institutions, grassroots organizations, and community members.
- Computer/Office Equipment Skills: Must be comfortable working in PC/Windows-based environments, with strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with content management systems, social media platforms, and/or reporting and database tools.
- Other Skills: Demonstrated cultural competence and commitment to health equity working with diverse populations, including transgender and gender-expansive communities, LGBTQ+ older adults, and people living with HIV.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public health, health advocacy, political science, or a related field.
- Professional Experience:
- Experience with community organizing, coalition-building, or grassroots campaign work.
- Experience working with or alongside Federally Qualified Health Centers, hospital systems, or other healthcare institutions.
- Experience developing toolkits, programming, or resources intended for distribution to multiple sites or organizations.
- Experience with grant-funded program implementation and funder reporting.
- Experience with trauma-informed practice.
- Language: Fluency in Spanish.
- Other Skills: Knowledgeable about current issues affecting the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly transgender health access and the needs of LGBTQ+ older adults and people living with HIV.
WORK LOCATION
- In Office: on-site at The Center's main office, with regular local travel across San Diego County for partner meetings, community engagement, and the regional convening.
- Occasional work hours in the evening and on weekends are required for programming, community events, and the regional convening.
- Office in the Hillcrest neighborhood in the City of San Diego.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Compensation: The pay range for this position is $29.80 – $31.25 per hour and is commensurate with experience. This is a Full-Time, Grant-Funded, Non-Exempt position, funded through an 18-month grant from The California Endowment, with continuation contingent on future funding.
- Benefits: The CENTER offers a robust benefits package, inclusive of Competitive Pay Scales, 401(k) Retirement Plan (with company match), Full Medical, Dental, Vision, and Chiropractic Health Coverage, Out-of-Pocket Optional Coverage for Spouses, Domestic Partners, and Dependent Children, Full-time and Part-Time Schedules, Generous Vacation and Holiday Benefits, Professional Training & Development Experiences, Opportunities for Promotion & Advancement
