What types of projects can I expect to work on during a Health Equity Internship?

As a Health Equity Intern, you can expect to work on projects that address disparities in healthcare access and outcomes among diverse populations. Typical responsibilities include assisting with data collection and analysis, supporting community outreach initiatives, and helping create educational materials for underserved groups. Interns often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including healthcare providers, public health professionals, and community leaders, to develop and implement interventions. These experiences provide valuable insight into public health practices and prepare you for future roles in health equity and advocacy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Health Equity Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Health Equity Intern, you need a foundational understanding of public health principles, health disparities, and data analysis, often supported by coursework or experience in public health or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Office Suite, data visualization platforms, and qualitative/quantitative research methods is typically required. Strong communication, cultural competence, and a collaborative mindset are essential soft skills for engaging diverse communities and stakeholders. These skills ensure interns can effectively support initiatives aimed at reducing health inequities and contribute meaningfully to team goals.

Interns work with organizations or agencies focused on public health, policy analysis, community engagement, or research to understand and reduce inequities that affect marginalized or underserved populations. The internship typically involves a mix of project work, data analysis, outreach, and participation in educational seminars, helping interns develop valuable skills and knowledge for a career in health equity.
