What is health coding?

Health coding, also known as medical coding, is the process of translating healthcare diagnoses, procedures, medical services, and equipment into standardized codes. These codes are used for billing, insurance claims, and maintaining patient records. Medical coders use classification systems such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS to ensure accurate and consistent documentation across the healthcare system. Accurate coding is essential for healthcare providers to receive proper reimbursement and for maintaining patient care data integrity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a health coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Health Coder, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding systems, supported by certification such as CPC, CCS, or CCA. Proficiency in ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems, as well as familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) software, is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong organizational skills help Health Coders ensure accuracy and compliance. These skills are crucial for proper billing, minimizing claim denials, and upholding the integrity of patient records in healthcare organizations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in health coding, and how can they be managed effectively?

Health Coding professionals often encounter challenges such as keeping up with frequent updates to coding standards (like ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS), ensuring accuracy when interpreting complex medical records, and managing high workloads with tight deadlines. To manage these challenges, coders should regularly participate in continuing education, use coding reference tools, and maintain open communication with clinical staff for clarification. Many organizations also offer support through team collaboration and mentoring, which helps coders stay current and maintain high-quality work.

What is the difference between Health Coding vs Medical Billing?

AspectHealth CodingMedical Billing
Primary FocusAssigning codes to diagnoses and proceduresGenerating and managing billing invoices
CredentialsCertification (e.g., CPC, CCS)Certification (e.g., CPC, CBCS) often preferred
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, insurance companiesMedical offices, billing companies, insurance firms
Job TasksReviewing medical records, coding diagnoses/proceduresSubmitting claims, follow-up on payments

Health Coding and Medical Billing are closely related healthcare roles. Health Coding involves translating medical diagnoses and procedures into standardized codes, while Medical Billing focuses on submitting claims and managing payments. Both roles often require similar certifications and work in healthcare settings, but they serve different functions within the revenue cycle.

Job description

Split Shift Hospitalist – BSA Health System | Amarillo, Texas

Physician-led, hospital-employed split-shift opportunity in a Top 100 Hospital with full intensivist and specialty support.

Join a collaborative and well-established hospitalist program at Baptist St. Anthony’s Hospital, a 450-bed regional referral center in the heart of the Texas Panhandle. The BSA Hospitalist Group includes 36 board-certified/board-eligible physicians and 8 advanced practice providers managing a daily census of approximately 230–240 patients. This opportunity offers autonomy with strong system support, 24/7 intensivist backup, and a collegial culture known for stability and teamwork.

About the Role

Our split shift team provides admissions, ICU and floor cross-coverage, and NP supervision with dedicated support from intensivists and the day and nocturnist team.

  • Schedule: 2 PM – 2 AM or 3 PM – 3 AM (12-hour shift) | 7-on / 7-off
  • Primary Duties: Our service provides inpatient care for patients referred by community physicians and the emergency room.
  • ICU: Semi-open model with 24/7 medical and surgical intensivist coverage; hospitalists may manage selected ICU patients in coordination
  • Procedures: Optional – central line and airway skills encouraged but not required; vascular access team handles most lines; RT, ICU, and Anesthesia available for airway support
  • EMR: Epic

Our Hospitalist program provides a balanced workload which allows time for thoughtful chart review, communication with families, and patient-centered decision-making. Physicians here feel supported, not rushed—and that makes a measurable difference in care quality.

Our program is known for its organization and efficiency—from well-defined coverage roles to NP-assistance with direct patient care, phone triage and seamless patient distribution. It’s a system designed to let physicians focus on medicine, not logistics.

    Operational Snapshot

  • 450-bed acute-care facility | 50-bed ICU | Level III Trauma | Chest Pain & Primary Stroke Centers
  • Average daily hospitalist census: ~230 patients | ~55 new admits/consults per day
  • MDs average 6–7 admissions per shift | NPs average 4–5
  • Cross-coverage shared with evening (split) team for seamless hand-offs
  • RRTs & Codes: Led by Texas Tech Family Practice residents with ICU nursing support; tele-neurology stroke team available
  • Hospitalists admit for nearly all services except selected surgical subspecialties

    Specialty & Ancillary Support

Comprehensive specialty backup ensures seamless care at all levels of acuity: Pulmonary/Critical Care | Cardiology (Interventional & EP) | GI (Interventional) | ID | Oncology | Neurology & Tele-Neuro | Nephrology | Psychiatry | Endocrinology | Rheumatology | Palliative Care and Inpatient Hospice | General & Trauma Surgery | Vascular & Thoracic Surgery | Surgical Oncology | OB-GYN & GYN-Onc | ENT | Urology | Orthopedics | Hand Surgery | Plastic Surgery | Podiatry | IR | OMFS | Ophthalmology | Full Imaging & Rehab Services.

    Culture & Team Environment

Physicians consistently describe our group as a true work family—collegial, reliable, and deeply supportive across shifts. We value practicing good medicine over high-volume throughput. BSA’s physician-friendly culture and commitment to manageable workloads allow providers to deliver meaningful, patient-centered care.

    Community Highlights

  • Amarillo is a thriving regional hub with a population of 268,000 and a growing healthcare, education, and aviation economy.

  • Paid malpractice (with tail) | Retirement plan | CME allowance
