Headless Developer information

What is a headless developer?

A Headless Developer specializes in building applications using headless architecture, where the frontend (user interface) is decoupled from the backend (content management or data source). This allows developers to create flexible, scalable, and customizable digital experiences across multiple platforms like web, mobile apps, and IoT devices. Headless Developers typically work with APIs to connect the backend to various frontends, enabling faster development cycles and easier content delivery. Their expertise is valuable for organizations seeking omnichannel solutions and modern web development practices.

How does a headless developer typically collaborate with designers and backend teams on projects?

As a Headless Developer, you will often work closely with designers to implement user interfaces using frontend frameworks, while collaborating with backend teams to integrate APIs and data sources. This role requires strong communication skills to ensure the visual and functional aspects of the application align with both design guidelines and backend capabilities. Expect to participate in regular stand-ups, code reviews, and planning sessions where cross-team coordination is essential for delivering seamless digital experiences. Effective collaboration is key to addressing challenges that arise from decoupling the frontend and backend.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a headless developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Headless Developer, you need a strong background in web development, API design, JavaScript frameworks (such as React or Vue), and a solid understanding of headless CMS platforms. Familiarity with tools like Contentful, Strapi, GraphQL, RESTful APIs, and version control systems (e.g., Git) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability to rapidly changing technologies are valuable soft skills. These competencies ensure seamless integration of backend and frontend systems, delivering flexible, scalable digital experiences.

What is the difference between Headless Developer vs Front-End Developer?

AspectHeadless DeveloperFront-End Developer
Primary FocusBuilding and integrating decoupled backend systems with APIs for flexible content deliveryDesigning and implementing user interfaces and user experiences for websites and applications
Required SkillsAPI integration, backend development, JavaScript frameworks, CMS knowledgeHTML, CSS, JavaScript, UI/UX design, responsive design
Work EnvironmentOften collaborates with backend teams, works on headless CMS and API-driven platformsPrimarily works on client-side development, visual design, and user interaction

While both roles involve JavaScript and web development, a Headless Developer specializes in backend and API integration for flexible content management, whereas a Front-End Developer focuses on creating engaging user interfaces and experiences. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and responsibilities for each role.

This role requires a strong hands-on background in building scalable, maintainable, high-quality, and high-performing digital experiences using Sitecore, SitecoreAI, modern .NET, ASP.NET Core, C#, and headless front-end technologies including React, Next.js, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

The Lead Developer will collaborate directly with clients and work within a Genpact team of project/product managers, experience designers, QA analysts, architects, and developers to deliver enterprise-grade solutions using modern web standards, component-based development practices, API-driven integrations, and composable DXP architecture patterns.

  • Develop Sitecore renderings, components, templates, layouts, and content models using .NET, Sitecore APIs, HTML/CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, and modern front-end framework patterns where appropriate.
  • Customize the Sitecore CMS authoring interface, workflows, permissions, content trees, and authoring features for unique business use cases based on user stories and technical designs.
  • Integrate Sitecore implementations with Sitecore XM/XP, XM Cloud, Sitecore AI, Headless Services/JSS, Experience Edge, Content Hub, Sitecore Search, CDP/Personalize, REST APIs, GraphQL, and third-party systems.
  • Create and maintain custom REST APIs, service integrations, and JSON-based endpoints to support asynchronous data delivery and application integrations.
  • Ensure high-performance and scalable page delivery that supports load testing, accessibility standards, security practices, technical SEO, Core Web Vitals, and modern web best practices.
  • Create scripts, utilities, and automation to support content migration, bulk content operations, serialization, environment synchronization, and repeatable development workflows.
  • Test the combination of code, content, templates, and components to validate functionality, accessibility, responsive behavior, and authoring usability.
  • Contribute to feature specifications, user stories, technical designs, implementation notes, training materials, and delivery documentation to support knowledge transfer.
  • Collaborate with team members through development, QA, launch, stabilization, and maintenance while helping remove technical blockers and improve delivery quality.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership through code reviews, troubleshooting, mentoring, estimation support, and practical guidance for developers on the team.
What We’d like to See
  • 5+ years of experience working with the Sitecore platform, with a willingness to deepen expertise across the broader Sitecore ecosystem.
  • 8+ years of experience working in C#, .NET, ASP.NET Core, or ASP.NET MVC stacks while applying SOLID object-oriented design principles and maintainable engineering practices.
  • Experience developing Sitecore templates, renderings, layouts, workflows, publishing patterns, permissions, and CMS content models that create an elegant and easy-to-use authoring experience.
  • Experience with Sitecore development practices such as SXA, serialization, solution conventions, component-based development, Helix-aligned architecture, and environment-aware configuration.
  • Exposure to modern DevOps, CI/CD, cloud hosting models, containerization such as Docker or Kubernetes, and serverless functions on Azure, AWS, or similar platforms.
  • Understanding of accessibility, performance, Core Web Vitals, technical SEO, security, and responsive delivery best practices, with the ability to implement those standards in code.
  • Knowledge of Agile development methodologies and sprint-based delivery, with familiarity using Azure DevOps, Jira, or similar work management tools.
  • Familiarity with Git version control, branching strategies, pull requests, code reviews, and collaborative development workflows.
  • Familiarity with modular component design and modern front-end tooling such as npm, Webpack or Vite, Sass, responsive grid frameworks, and modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • Curiosity in the craft of software delivery and a habit of keeping up with Sitecore roadmaps, .NET platform changes, front-end frameworks, and the evolving digital experience landscape.
  • Passion for crisp delivery, strong engineering discipline, pragmatic problem solving, and pushing boundaries through thoughtful, innovative approaches.
Leadership & Consulting Skills
  • Ability to lead technical conversations with clients, architects, product owners, designers, QA, and development team members.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical decisions, trade-offs, blockers, and implementation approach clearly.
  • Experience mentoring developers, reviewing code, improving implementation quality, and creating a collaborative engineering culture.
  • Comfortable balancing hands-on development with technical leadership, estimation support, delivery guidance, and client-facing collaboration.
  • Proactive ownership mindset with the ability to self-manage work, identify risks early, and help the team move decisions and deliverables forward.
