Job description

We are seeking a skilled Paving Screed Operator to join our asphalt paving crew. In this role, you will control the rear attachment on an asphalt paver to spread, smooth, and initially compact hot-mix asphalt. This critical position dictates the final thickness, slope, cross-fall, and smooth ride quality of roads, highways, parking lots, and commercial sites.

Responsibilities

  • Adjust height, crown, and slope settings to ensure the asphalt mat meets exact project blueprints and grade control specifications.
  • Monitor the auger chamber to maintain a consistent head of material across the entire screed width.
  • Inspect the asphalt mat continuously for surface blemishes, tears, segregation, or texture variations.
  • Work closely with the paver operator, rakers, and roller operators to maintain consistent paving speed and mat quality.
  • Operate manual, automatic, and automated grade and slope control equipment.
  • Perform daily maintenance, cleaning, and safety inspections on the screed and associated paving equipment.
  • Follow all job site safety guidelines, OSHA standards, and company safety rules.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience working as a paving screed operator on road, highway, or commercial asphalt paving projects.
  • Strong knowledge of asphalt materials, laydown techniques, grade control, and compaction procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret project blueprints, grade stakes, and slope specifications.
  • Ability to work long hours, night shifts, and perform manual labor outdoors in changing weather conditions.
  • Excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to working as part of a crew.
  • Reliable transportation to travel to assigned job sites.
