Deputy US Head of Newsletters

Location: Daily Mail, New York
Position: Full Time/ Permanent 

Salary: $105-$120k Depending on experience

Job Introduction
We are seeking a dynamic, experienced and highly organized individual to join our team as Deputy US Head of Newsletters. This is a senior hands-on role supporting the US Head of Newsletters in the growth, production and optimization of the Daily Mail's US newsletter portfolio, which is crucial to achieving our North Star goal of 1m global subscribers by 2028.

The role requires exceptional copywriting, editing and proofreading skills, strong national media experience, and proven expertise in launching or relaunching editorial newsletters. The successful candidate must also have strong experience using Sailthru or a comparable enterprise newsletter platform, including building, scheduling, testing, segmentation, reporting and list management.

The ideal candidate will be calm under pressure, rigorous on standards and comfortable working across a fast-moving newsroom. He or she will collaborate closely with reporters, senior editors, the UK newsletter team, audience, product and commercial colleagues to deliver compelling newsletters, improve performance and help scale the US newsletter operation.

Main Responsibilities

Newsletter production and curation

Develop, edit, package and produce compelling newsletters across a range of topics, ensuring high-quality standards and alignment with the Daily Mail editorial guidelines.

Proofreading and editing

Review newsletter content for accuracy, clarity, tone, consistency and legal/editorial sensitivity, maintaining the Daily Mail's voice and standards.

Sailthru production and management

Build, schedule, test and send newsletters in Sailthru, managing segmentation, templates, reporting, list hygiene and troubleshooting as required.

Launch and relaunch delivery

Help plan and execute new newsletter launches and relaunches, including editorial proposition, format, cadence, workflow, testing and post-launch optimization.

Audience engagement

Implement strategies to grow newsletter subscriptions, improve open rates and click-through rates, strengthen reader loyalty and increase engagement.

Collaboration

Work closely with the US Head of Newsletters, senior newsroom leaders, section editors, reporters and the UK newsletter team to align newsletter content with wider editorial priorities.

Performance analysis

Monitor and analyze newsletter metrics, providing clear insights and practical recommendations for optimization.

Workflow and coordination

Help manage day-to-day newsletter workflow, deadlines, production schedules, cross-desk coordination and rotas, ensuring the operation runs efficiently and consistently.

Deputizing

Act as a senior point of contact for the US newsletter operation when required, helping to resolve editorial, production and scheduling issues.

Innovation

Stay updated on industry trends, competitor newsletters and best practices in digital media, suggesting new approaches to reach and expand audiences.

 

Person Specification

  • Proven experience in copywriting and editing within a national media environment.
  • Strong proficiency in proofreading and ensuring editorial quality.
  • Excellent news judgment and a sharp understanding of what makes readers open, click, read and return.
  • Proven experience editing, launching or relaunching editorial newsletters.
  • Strong hands-on expertise in Sailthru or a comparable enterprise newsletter platform, including newsletter build, scheduling, testing, segmentation, reporting and list management.
  • Experience using newsletter performance data to improve subject lines, formats, send times, engagement and retention.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with senior stakeholders.
  • Deep understanding of audience engagement strategies, particularly in the context of newsletters and digital content.
