Job description

Founded in 2001, Verasonics' mission is to provide researchers and developers with the most advanced and flexible tools that enable them to develop new algorithms and products used in biomedical ultrasound, materials science, earth sciences, and the physics of acoustics and ultrasonics. We are currently searching for a Head of Engineering to join our team.
Our ideal candidate is a highly experienced engineering leader who will be responsible for leading and guiding the overall research and development for the organization. We are open to candidates seeking either full-time or contract opportunities.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Works closely with the company's executive management to develop and implement long-range organizational strategic objectives, operating policies and procedures, and resource plans to achieve the organization's technology, research and development, and business goals.
  • Establishes, coordinates, and executes responsibilities and procedures amongst technical teams and cross-functionally in alignment with other functions to achieve the organization's business goals.
  • Provides leadership, optimal staffing, and overall management of the engineering team

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • The Head of Engineering is responsible for managing the Engineering team and has direct supervisory responsibilities including hiring, developing/training, mentoring/coaching, and terminating employees.

Education and Experience
  • 20+ years of experience in hardware, mechanical, or system engineering and experience working with a complex system, preferably an ultrasound system, in the medical device, test and measurement or related field.
  • 15+ years of engineering functional management experience in a related field, including organizational development, recruiting and hiring excellent candidates, team building, and performance management
  • Experience working with science or advanced development teams and leading ideas through product realization.
  • Extensive experience successfully working through difficult, complex development cycles and delivering on time.
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering field is required; an MS or Doctoral degree is highly preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience can be substituted to meet these requirements.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Proven expertise in working with a cross-functional product development team, including engineering, marketing, and operations.
  • Proven experience managing functional managers and senior individual contributors, as well as mentoring managers and individual contributors in a variety of fields.
  • Demonstrated strong business acumen and experience managing team budget and/or P&L.
  • Technical leadership and relationship-building skills, ability to motivate others, and solid decision-making skills.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and be a team player with solid attention to detail.
  • Requires a self-starter with innate curiosity, an eagerness to help where needed, and a desire to learn new things.
  • The candidate will have a reputation and record of effective collaboration with peers, subordinates, and superiors as well as outside advisors and customers.
  • The candidate must be an effective team builder, able to bring out the best in people through both coaching and by example.
  • S/he must be an excellent communicator who radiates compassion and integrity.
  • A deep understanding of ultrasound technologies and products is highly preferred.
  • Travel, both national and international, is required for this position. Required travel involves day trips and/or overnight trips by car and/or airplane. Expected travel is up to 20% of the time.
