Description
The Program of Adult Literacy Services (PALS) provides non-credit students with educational and workforce training opportunities.
Primarily, we offer English-language acquisition (ESL/ELL) programs, short-term career training programs, and preparation to earn a Maryland high school diploma through GED study courses and the National External Diploma Program (NEDP).
Duties
Student workers in the Program of Adult Literacy Services (PALS) assist staff in a variety of office tasks, and they provide exceptional customer service to all students, staff, and visitors.
1) Front desk coverage: covering phones and office email, returning messages, making calls, providing general program information, assisting students in scheduling intake assessment appointments.
2) Office tasks: filing paperwork, making copies, organizing and distributing paperwork, entering class information and attendance into spreadsheets and other documents.
3) Intake and assessment support: welcoming students to appointments and assisting the Intake, Assessment and Transition Specialist (IATS) by collecting intake information, walking students to and from the Academic Testing Center, and occasionally providing support during evening and weekend appointments.
4) Other tasks: completing on-campus errands; creating a welcoming and positive presence, treating others with courtesy and respect; assisting in planning and execution of workshops, PALS year-end recognition ceremony, and other events.
Special skills needed
  • Familiarity with Excel spreadsheets and database use
  • Entering demographic information
  • Ability to understand and manage cloud-based file storage using OneDrive and network drives
  • Ability to navigate online calendars and forms
  • Graphic design intuition
  • Attention to detail is a MUST

Other skills required: friendliness, maturity, the ability to maintain high level of confidentiality in conducting office assignments; excellent customer service and phone manners; organization and time management; the ability to work with a positive attitude
The ability to communicate verbally in SPANISH and FRENCH is an asset for success in this position; written Spanish and French abilities for emails and texts are welcome, and other multilingual skills are greatly appreciated and encouraged.
Additional information
Student worker shifts are scheduled during the following times:
Monday - Friday from 8:30am - 4:30pm and occasional evenings from 4:30pm - 7:30pm.
Saturday mornings and afternoons may be requested depending on office need.
Shifts are usually scheduled in four-hour increments. Preference is given to students who will be attending HCC for more than a single semester and students who can work a consistent schedule.
Requirements
MUST BE A CURRENT HCC STUDENT FOR THE SUMMER/FALL 2026 SEMESTER.
MUST BE ENROLLED IN AT LEAST 6 CREDITS.
UNLESS FIRST-SEMESTER STUDENT, MUST HAVE ATTAINED A 2.0 SEMESTER GPA DURING THE LAST SEMESTER ATTENDED.
