Hcbs Supervisor information

What is an HCBS supervisor?

An HCBS Supervisor is a professional responsible for overseeing Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) programs, which provide support to individuals with disabilities or elderly persons so they can live independently in their communities. The supervisor manages staff, ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, and coordinates care plans tailored to each client's needs. Additionally, HCBS Supervisors often work closely with families, service providers, and case managers to ensure high-quality service delivery and address any issues that arise.

What are some common challenges faced by an HCBS supervisor and how can they be effectively managed?

As an HCBS Supervisor, one of the most common challenges is balancing administrative responsibilities with direct staff support and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Supervisors often need to address varying needs of clients while managing staff schedules and training, all within strict budgetary and policy guidelines. Effective time management, strong communication skills, and proactive problem-solving are essential to succeed in this role. Building a supportive team environment and staying updated on industry regulations can help address these challenges and lead to positive outcomes for both staff and clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HCBS supervisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HCBS Supervisor, you need in-depth knowledge of home and community-based services, case management experience, and typically a degree in social work or a related field. Familiarity with Medicaid regulations, electronic case management systems, and relevant certifications such as CPR or First Aid are often required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential for managing staff and addressing client needs effectively. These competencies ensure the delivery of compliant, high-quality services that support individuals living independently in their communities.

**Please read the ENTIRE job posting before applying**

This role operates in a Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Setting, defined as “medical, social, and supportive services for Iowans with functional, cognitive, and other physical or mental health needs” (Iowa Health & Human Services). Rather than institutionalizing individuals who have these physical and mental health needs, HCBS settings provide these individuals with the opportunity to live and receive services in a way honoring to them and their abilities.

Direct Support Professionals are the heartbeat of what we do at Imagine the Possibilities – empowering people to reach individual achievement across the spectrum of life. If you’re passionate about empowering people to reach their goals and help them strive for more, we want you to join our team. As an integral part of the overall care team, you will collaborate with other Direct Support Professionals, Programmers, Supervisors, individuals-served, and their families to ensure the best possible care for those you serve. You will fulfill an individual’s behavioral care plan by creatively strategizing the best way for each individual to reach and exceed their goals. Your innovative and impactful solutions and strategies will make the difference for those you serve.

What Winning Looks Like:

While it’s not a competition, we do recognize that each person wants to ‘win’ at life; and you’re a central part of someone else’s wins as well as your own! In this role, you’ll be responsible to:

  • Goal Input & Person-Centered Support: Collaborate with the HCBS Supervisor and Programmer to develop individualized goals and provide direct support that focuses on teaching skills, promoting independence, and encouraging participation in recreational and community activities.
  • Behavioral & Rights-Based Support: Use approved behavioral strategies to support individuals with challenging behaviors while respecting rights restrictions only as outlined by the interdisciplinary team and individual service plans.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Complete accurate, timely, and Iowa Code–compliant documentation in Setworks, ensuring all required service details, interventions, and individual responses are properly recorded and submitted daily.
  • Direct Care & Community Integration: Provide hands-on support in home and community settings, including daily living assistance, transportation, mobility support, safety monitoring, property respect, and active encouragement of choice and independence.
  • Medication, Scheduling & Professional Responsibility: Administer and document medications per the six rights, follow all agency policies and procedures, maintain reliable attendance (including weekends/holidays), complete required training, and communicate concerns or updates through appropriate channels.

Know We’re For You:

We know finding the right opportunity can be tricky – that’s why Imagine is focused on making sure your time is well spent. We take pride in the benefits we offer our employees. As an employee, you’ll have access to a variety of benefits that are sure to sweeten the deal. Depending on your full-time or part-time status, you’ll have access to:

  • Competitive Wages: The base pay is $17/hour. With education and experience, you could start out making more than that.
  • Scheduling: We’re a 24/7 service provider, offering a variety of shifts and scheduling options based on program needs.
  • Training: This is an entry-level position, and we provide comprehensive training to ensure every employee feels confident and supported as they get started.
