Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the direct supervision of the Phlebotomy/Lab Supervisor, he/she will obtain and prepare specimens for analysis and perform various screening tests as indicated. He/she is responsible for the collection of venous and capillary blood samples using various techniques (i.e. syringe, heel stick, venipunctures, finger (stick). Receive, process and distribute laboratory specimens.

  • Supports the philosophy of  Kingwood Medical Center by facilitating cooperation of hospital staff in a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.
  • Consistently provides outstanding service to all patients, physicians, fellow employees, and guests.
  • Displays initiative to see processes through to completion and offers assistance without being asked.
  • Maintains awareness of own limitations and seeks guidance from appropriate personnel as needed.
  • Prioritizes activities of self based on demands for service.
  • Remains alert to the detection of errors in own work and the work of others with appropriate corrective actions initiated.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of patient rights, including those pertaining to confidentiality, informed decision-making, and privacy.
  • Is aware of resources available for ethical concerns and makes appropriate referrals.
  • Practices cost-efficiently.
  • Performs technical skills proficiently in accordance with established standards, as evidenced by annual validation processes.
  • Successfully obtains blood specimens by Veni-puncture in one attempt 95% of the time.
  • Identifies patient according to established procedure, 100% of the time.
  • Ensures departmental supplies are ordered on designated day, 95% of the time.

Minimum Work Experience:

Two to three years experience in a clinical/ phlebotomy setting preferred.

Skills:

  • Proficient in phlebotomy technique, including venipunctures and capillary sticks
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to multi-task and be detailed oriented
  • Must be able to perform skills efficiently and accurately

License Registration Certification:

  • Certificate in Phlebotomy preferred or equivalent experience preferred
  • BCLS certification required from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
