How much do hca per diem jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for hca per diem in the United States is $36.01, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.03 and $45.19 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a HCA Per Diem, and why are they important?

To thrive as a HCA Per Diem (Healthcare Assistant), you need a solid understanding of basic patient care, hygiene support, and observation skills, usually supported by a healthcare certificate or relevant experience. Familiarity with electronic care records, mobility aids, and basic medical equipment is typically required. Compassion, flexibility, and strong communication skills help HCAs build trust with patients and support multidisciplinary teams effectively. These abilities ensure safe, responsive care and smooth team collaboration, which are vital in the often fast-changing per diem environment.

How to make an extra 2000 a month as a nurse?

HCA per diem nurses can increase their income by taking on additional shifts, working overtime, or signing up for high-demand specialties. Gaining certifications in areas like IV therapy or wound care can also qualify for higher-paying assignments, and working flexible or weekend shifts often offers extra pay. Building a strong reputation and maintaining availability can help secure more lucrative per diem opportunities.

What are some common challenges faced by HCA Per Diem staff, and how can they be managed?

HCA Per Diem staff often work in varying departments and shifts, which means adapting quickly to new teams and workflows is a frequent challenge. Flexibility and strong communication skills are essential for integrating smoothly and providing consistent patient care. Building a routine for rapid orientation and staying organized can help manage the unpredictability. Additionally, maintaining open communication with supervisors about availability and preferences can lead to more consistent and satisfying assignments.

Why does HCA pay so low?

HCA Per Diem positions typically offer lower pay rates compared to full-time roles due to their part-time or temporary nature, flexible scheduling, and fewer benefits. Compensation is often based on hourly wages without extensive benefits packages, which can contribute to lower overall pay.

How to make $300,000 as a nurse?

HCA Per Diem nurses can increase their earnings by working multiple shifts, specializing in high-demand areas, obtaining advanced certifications, and working in high-paying regions or facilities. Building experience and taking on leadership or specialized roles can also boost income potential, but reaching $300,000 typically requires a combination of full-time hours, overtime, and strategic career choices.

What is the highest paying per diem job?

HCA Per Diem roles typically offer competitive pay, but the highest paying per diem jobs are often specialized healthcare positions such as anesthesiologists, radiologists, or nurse anesthetists, especially when working in high-demand areas or requiring advanced certifications. These roles can pay significantly more due to the specialized skills and experience required, often exceeding standard per diem rates for general nursing or healthcare support roles.

What is an HCA Per Diem?

An HCA Per Diem is a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) who works on a per diem, or as-needed, basis rather than holding a full-time or part-time permanent position. Per diem HCAs fill shifts based on the needs of healthcare facilities, which allows for flexible schedules and a variety of work environments. This role typically involves assisting nurses with patient care tasks such as hygiene, mobility, and monitoring vital signs. Per diem work is ideal for those who want flexibility or are seeking to gain experience in different clinical settings.
