Harness Engineer information

What engineers make 200,000 a year?

Senior engineers in fields such as software, petroleum, aerospace, and electrical engineering often earn $200,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and in high-demand industries. Roles requiring specialized certifications, leadership responsibilities, or working in competitive markets tend to have higher compensation levels.

What does a harness engineer do?

A harness engineer designs, develops, and tests wiring harnesses used in vehicles, aircraft, or machinery to ensure electrical systems are properly connected and function reliably. They use CAD software and follow industry standards to create detailed schematics and may collaborate with manufacturing teams to oversee assembly and quality control.

What are some typical challenges a Harness Engineer faces when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Harness Engineers often work closely with design, manufacturing, and testing teams to ensure wiring systems are integrated seamlessly into complex products. A common challenge is managing communication between departments, as design changes can impact harness routing or specifications. Additionally, ensuring that harness designs meet both electrical and mechanical requirements while adhering to tight project timelines can be demanding. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are crucial for navigating these challenges and delivering effective solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Harness Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Harness Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, experience with wire harness design, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software (such as CATIA or AutoCAD), wiring diagram tools, and industry standards like IPC/WHMA-A-620 is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure reliable, safe, and compliant harness designs critical for performance in industries like automotive and aerospace.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum engineering, aerospace engineering, or certain senior software engineering roles can earn $500,000 or more annually, often including bonuses and stock options. These positions typically require advanced skills, extensive experience, and often involve leadership or executive responsibilities.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, aerospace engineering, and certain roles in data science or machine learning can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership responsibilities. High compensation often involves working in high-demand industries, holding advanced degrees, or obtaining professional certifications.

What are harness engineers?

Harness engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain wiring harness systems used to connect electrical and electronic components in vehicles, machinery, or equipment. They are responsible for creating detailed schematics, selecting appropriate materials, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. Harness engineers work closely with other engineering teams to ensure the wiring harnesses meet the specific functional and environmental requirements of the product. Their work is crucial in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and industrial manufacturing.

What is the difference between Harness Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectHarness EngineerElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related field; certifications like IPC/WHMA-A-620Bachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing wiring harnesses, working in manufacturing or automotive settingsDesigning electrical systems, working in various industries including power, electronics, and manufacturing
Employer & Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, electronics manufacturingPower generation, electronics, telecommunications, manufacturing

While both roles require electrical knowledge, Harness Engineers focus on designing and testing wiring harnesses for specific applications like automotive or aerospace, whereas Electrical Engineers work on broader electrical systems and circuitry across multiple industries.

You will be part of a rapidly growing team responsible for PCBA design, component selection, wire harness designs, and validation testing. Ideally, the harness engineer should have exposure to a broad range of technical challenges and methods in the context of product development, including connector selection, cable shielding, twisted pair communication wires, cable protection, and harness routing. Cross-team collaboration throughout the product development organization is a critical part of this role, so systems-level thinking and multidisciplinary engineering problem-solving are key traits of a successful candidate.

Responsibilitiesย
ย  ย  Work cross-functionally with Mechanical, Compliance, and Electrical engineers to define harness requirements, material, and connector selection
ย  ย  Create and maintain 2D electrical harness single and multi-line schematics
ย  ย  Draft fabrication, manufacturing, inspection, and assembly drawings for wire harness assemblies
ย  ย  Identify suitable materials and components for wire harness assembly
ย  ย  Work closely with procurement teams to source materials and components from approved suppliers
ย  ย  Define routing, shielding, wire color, sealing, and EMI design specifications
ย  ย  Collaborate closely with mechanical engineers on wire harness CAD routing through mechanical features and harness fixation points
ย  ย  Troubleshoot wire harness bring-up and validation
ย  ย  Communicate project progress, challenges, and solutions effectively to team members and management

Qualificationsย
ย  ย  A Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical OR Electrical Engineering
ย  ย  2+ years experience in product development (experience in energy storage or renewable energy is a plus)
ย  ย  Hands-on experience designing and building electro-mechanical systems and harnesses
ย  ย  Expertise with 3D CAD, PLM, and Harness design software such as Zuken E3.
