What is a hardware test engineer?

Hardware Test Engineers are professionals responsible for evaluating and verifying the functionality, reliability, and quality of electronic hardware components and systems. They design and execute tests to ensure products meet industry standards and specifications. Their tasks include developing test plans, troubleshooting issues, and working closely with design and manufacturing teams to resolve hardware problems. Hardware Test Engineers play a crucial role in ensuring that electronic products perform as intended before they reach consumers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardware test engineer?

To thrive as a Hardware Test Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics, circuit analysis, and test methodologies, usually supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with test automation tools, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and certifications such as ISTQB or Six Sigma are valuable assets. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork enhance performance in this role. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure product reliability, troubleshoot issues efficiently, and contribute to high-quality hardware development.

What are some common challenges hardware test engineers face when working on new product prototypes?

Hardware Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as debugging unexpected failures during prototype testing, adapting to rapidly changing design revisions, and balancing thoroughness with tight project deadlines. They may need to quickly develop new test procedures for innovative components and collaborate closely with design, firmware, and manufacturing teams to resolve issues. This dynamic work environment requires strong problem-solving skills and adaptability, as priorities can shift rapidly based on test results and project needs.

What is the difference between Hardware Test Engineer vs Electronics Test Engineer?

AspectHardware Test EngineerElectronics Test Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Electronics, or Computer Engineering; certifications like ISTQBBachelor's in Electronics, Electrical Engineering; certifications like ISTQB
Work EnvironmentTesting hardware components, circuit boards, and systems in labs or manufacturingTesting electronic devices, circuits, and embedded systems in labs or production lines
Employer & Industry UsageElectronics manufacturing, hardware development companies, tech firmsElectronics manufacturing, consumer electronics, telecommunications

Both roles focus on testing electronic hardware, but Hardware Test Engineers typically work on entire hardware systems and components, while Electronics Test Engineers often specialize in electronic circuits and embedded systems. The roles overlap in skills and industry usage, making them closely related but distinct in scope.

At RTX, the world's largest aerospace and defense company, 185,000 great minds are united by purpose and inspired to make a difference solving the world's most complex problems. With our three market leading businesses, world-class operations and investments in research and development, we offer capabilities and opportunity no one else can. Together, we push the boundaries of known science and find new ways to connect and protect our world.
Raytheon brings the strength of more than 100 years of experience and renowned engineering expertise to meet the needs of today's mission and stay ahead of tomorrow's threat. We deliver solutions that help our nation and allies defend freedoms and deter aggression, creating a safer, more secure world. Join us and help shape the future of aerospace and defense.
Raytheon's Receiver/Exciter & Processing Architecture (REPA) Department is the focal point for receiver, exciter, beam steering, and signal processing technology within the company. Our department is responsible for the design, development, integration, and lifecycle support of Raytheon's radar product portfolio.
We are seeking a Senior Hardware Integration, Analysis & Test Engineer excited about the opportunity to sit at the intersection of radar hardware, firmware, software, and signal processing and make it all work together. Join a growing Integration & Test Suite (ITS) team whose common toolset currently supports more than six active radar programs across S-, C-, X-, and UHF-Band systems. If you're someone who gets more satisfaction from building a tool that eliminates a problem forever than from fixing the same issue over and over, this opportunity is for you.
What You Will Do
  • Write, use, and maintain software that controls, tests, and characterizes real radar hardware - from module level all the way to system integration.
  • Dig into RF and IQ data to find the root cause of hard problems - the kind where the answer isn't obvious and the stakes are real.
  • Perform Receiver/Exciter hardware, software, and firmware design verification tests across multiple radar bands and programs and figure out what the data is telling you.
  • Build data analysis tools that give engineers and technicians answers faster - and eventually, building Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning tools do some of the heavy lifting.
  • Work directly with hardware designers, firmware developers, software and systems engineers - you'll need to speak all four languages.
  • Hands on hardware test and troubleshooting.
  • Own your work: if you build it, you'll support it, improve it, and teach others how to use it.
  • Operate across multiple Raytheon sites and interface directly with program engineering, production, and systems teams.
  • This 1st shift role will be 100% on-site and based in Tewksbury, MA, with significant travel expected to Marlborough, MA.

Qualifications You Must Have
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years' of prior relevant experience.
  • 3+ years' experience in two or more of the following areas:
    • Radar system or subsystem integration, verification, and validation
    • Programming in MATLAB or C/C++
    • Microwave/RF system, subsystem, and/or Circuit Card Assembly design or test
  • The ability to obtain and maintain an Interim Secret U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Qualifications We Prefer
  • Experience with IQ and signal processing analysis in MATLAB, C/C++, Python, or equivalent.
  • Experience with Linux and Git.
  • Experience with Radar Receiver/Exciter design and/or design verification testing.
  • Familiarity with radar system troubleshooting, root cause identification, and corrective action documentation.
  • Technical background in high-speed data converter test/characterization, radar system calibration, digital signal processing, cascade analysis, or frequency planning.
  • Exposure to AI/ML models or statistical process control concepts.
  • Self-starter capable of working independently and as part of a small, collaborative technical team.
  • Active / Existing Secret U.S. Security Clearance.

What We Offer
  • Our values drive our actions, behaviors, and performance with a vision for a safer, more connected world. At RTX we value: Safety, Trust, Respect, Accountability, Collaboration, and Innovation.
  • This position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility.
