What is a hardware supervisor?

Hardware Supervisors are professionals responsible for overseeing the installation, maintenance, and repair of computer hardware systems within an organization. They manage a team of technicians, ensure hardware operations run smoothly, and coordinate with other departments to meet technical requirements. Their duties often include troubleshooting issues, implementing upgrades, and maintaining inventory of hardware equipment. Hardware Supervisors also ensure compliance with safety standards and company policies, making them essential to the efficient operation of IT infrastructure.

What are the typical challenges a hardware supervisor faces when managing diverse technical teams?

As a Hardware Supervisor, one common challenge is balancing the technical needs of the team with project deadlines and resource constraints. Supervisors often oversee engineers, technicians, and support staff with varying expertise, requiring strong communication and conflict-resolution skills. Additionally, ensuring that all team members adhere to safety standards and quality protocols while coordinating with other departments can be complex. Staying updated with evolving hardware technologies and integrating new tools or processes is also a frequent part of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardware supervisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hardware Supervisor, you need expertise in hardware installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in electronics, engineering, or related fields. Familiarity with inventory management systems, diagnostic tools, and relevant certifications like CompTIA A+ or vendor-specific credentials is highly valuable. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills help manage teams and coordinate tasks effectively. These skills ensure efficient hardware operations, minimal downtime, and a well-coordinated technical team.

Job description

SUPERVISOR, HARDWARE RELIABILITY (STARLINK)

At SpaceX we're leveraging our experience in building rockets and spacecraft to deploy Starlink, the world's most advanced broadband internet system. Starlink is the world's largest satellite constellation and is providing fast, reliable internet to millions of users worldwide. We design, build, test, and operate all parts of the system - thousands of satellites, consumer receivers that allow users to connect within minutes of unboxing, and the software that brings it all together. We've only begun to scratch the surface of Starlink's potential global impact and are looking for best-in-class engineers to help maximize Starlink's utility for communities and businesses around the globe.

As a Supervisor on the Starlink Hardware Reliability team, you will lead a group of technicians and specialists responsible for root causing production failures on Starlink hardware. You will own the day-to-day operations of the production root cause lab and drive improvements that directly enhance product reliability and manufacturing quality.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of reliability technicians and specialists performing root cause analysis on electrical systems and PCBAs
  • Drive root cause findings into actionable improvements with manufacturing and design teams to reduce failure rates and improve yield
  • Own day-to-day operations of the production root cause lab, including technician scheduling, equipment maintenance, lab organization (5S), and resource planning
  • Develop and implement new processes and tools that improve the team's ability to efficiently and accurately root cause electrical failures
  • Establish clear priorities across multiple shifts and ensure timely communication of findings and recommendations to production stakeholders
  • Define and track team performance metrics and key indicators, holding the team accountable to measurable outcomes
  • Identify development opportunities for team members that align with both individual growth and Starlink program goals

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 3+ years of quality or reliability experience in a manufacturing environment

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, aerospace engineering, or related technical field
  • Demonstrated experience performing root cause analysis on electrical systems and PCBAs with expertise in diagnosing and resolving issues related to solder joint quality, component failures, and manufacturing/assembly defects
  • Experience training, mentoring, and developing technicians or junior engineers
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, highly iterative environment with rapidly changing priorities
  • Strong track record of influencing cross-functional teams through data-driven analysis and clear communication
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and drive completion of work across a team
  • Experience jumping into ambiguous problems and driving them to resolution
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in consumer electronics, aerospace, automotive, or other high-volume hardware manufacturing environments
  • Familiarity with quality management systems (ISO 9001 or equivalent)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and offsite as needed
