What is a Hardware Engineer Contract job?

A Hardware Engineer Contract job is a temporary or project-based role where engineers design, develop, and test hardware components for various systems. These contracts may last from a few months to a year or more, depending on the project's needs. Contractors often work for tech companies, manufacturers, or consulting firms, bringing specialized expertise without long-term commitments. This role typically involves circuit design, PCB layout, prototyping, and testing. Contract hardware engineers may work on-site or remotely, depending on the employer's requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Hardware Engineer Contract position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hardware Engineer Contract, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, circuit design, and prototyping, often supported by a relevant degree and hands-on experience. Familiarity with CAD software, PCB layout tools, and hardware validation systems is typically required, and certifications like IPC-A-610 or CompTIA ITF+ can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you excel within cross-functional teams and manage shifting project priorities. These competencies ensure you can deliver robust hardware solutions on time, collaborate effectively, and adapt to the dynamic nature of contract work.

What kind of projects and work environments can I expect as a contract hardware engineer?

As a contract hardware engineer, you'll often work on short- to mid-term projects such as new product development, system upgrades, or prototype testing for a variety of clients. Environments vary from in-house R&D labs and manufacturing floors to remote collaboration with distributed teams, depending on the client and project scope. You'll typically work alongside firmware engineers, product managers, and test engineers to deliver integrated solutions. This variety offers exposure to different industries and technologies, building both your expertise and professional network.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior hardware engineers, especially those with extensive experience, specialized skills in areas like FPGA design or ASIC development, and working in high-demand industries such as aerospace or semiconductor manufacturing, can earn $300,000 or more annually. Achieving this level often requires advanced certifications, leadership roles, and working in competitive markets or companies with high compensation standards.

Job description

We believe power is a promise - a shared commitment to be there for others when it matters most.
For more than 65 years, we've turned big ideas into solutions that help protect homes, strengthen businesses and build a more resilient, efficient, sustainable energy future.
Ready to Power a Smarter World with us?
The Staff Manufacturing Test Engineer - SW is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining manufacturing test software used in high volume production of Generac' solar, storage and home interconnect products . This role owns test software architecture across PCBA functional test, and EOL systems, with a strong emphasis on reliability, scalability, and data integrity.
The ideal candidate is a strong software engineer who understands manufacturing constraints and can bridge embedded systems, test equipment, and production operations.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain manufacturing test software for automated test equipment supporting PCBA functional, and EOL testing.
  • Write and maintain test software using Golang, LabVIEW, C#, or other appropriate languages, depending on platform and system needs.
  • Architect modular, maintainable, and reusable test software frameworks that scale across products and manufacturing sites.
  • Integrate test software with hardware interfaces, instrumentation, communication protocols, and manufacturing systems.
  • Partner with hardware, firmware, and systems engineering teams to ensure Design for Test (DFT) and robust test coverage.
  • Support deployment, debug, and sustaining of test software at internal and contract manufacturing sites.
  • Continuously improve test uptime, cycle time, and yield through software optimization and smarter diagnostics.
  • Implement automated data capture, logging, and analysis to detect anomalies and prevent escapes.
  • Participate in root cause analysis of production issues and implement long term software based solutions.
  • Maintain clear documentation for software architecture, test flows, deployment procedures, and troubleshooting guides.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience developing software for manufacturing test, validation, or automation systems. Candidates with a different experience level still welcome to apply.
  • Strong proficiency in one or more of the following: Golang, LabVIEW, C#, Python, or similar languages.
  • Experience designing and debugging automated test systems for electronic or electromechanical products.
  • Solid understanding of embedded systems, communication protocols, and test instrumentation.
  • Experience working in production environments with uptime, throughput, and quality constraints.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience building Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) or Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test systems.
  • Experience with communication protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, RS232, RS485, or similar.
  • Familiarity with test data analysis, yield metrics, and manufacturing KPIs.
  • Experience supporting new product introductions (NPI) and transferring test systems to contract manufacturers.
  • Experience developing Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) test systems to validate firmware and control software without physical hardware.
  • Proficiency with Linux-based systems and software version control tools.
  • Experience in clean energy, power electronics, or high reliability manufacturing environments.
