Hardware Development focuses on creating and testing new hardware products, while Hardware Engineering emphasizes applying engineering principles to develop, analyze, and improve hardware systems. Both roles often overlap but differ mainly in their scope: development is more about design and prototyping, whereas engineering involves detailed analysis and optimization.

What are some common challenges faced by hardware development engineers when working on new product designs?

Hardware development engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing performance requirements with cost and manufacturability, adhering to strict project timelines, and ensuring seamless integration with existing systems. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as software, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers—is essential to address design trade-offs and resolve technical issues. Additionally, staying updated on emerging technologies and compliance standards is crucial to delivering innovative and reliable hardware solutions.

What is hardware development?

Hardware development refers to the process of designing, creating, testing, and refining physical electronic devices and components, such as computer systems, circuit boards, microprocessors, and other hardware products. It involves both the conceptual design and practical implementation of physical parts, often working closely with software engineers to ensure compatibility and performance. Hardware developers use specialized tools and technologies to prototype, test, and manufacture reliable products for a variety of industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hardware Development Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive in Hardware Development, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, circuit design, and problem-solving, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CAD tools, PCB layout software, embedded systems, and industry certifications like IPC are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork set top performers apart in this field. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing reliable, innovative hardware products that meet technical and market requirements.

Principal Electrical Engineer

Avidyne

Melbourne, FL

Full-time

Job description

Avidyne Corporation is at the cutting edge of the aviation industry, driving forward advanced avionics for both conventional aircraft and next-generation advanced air mobility (AAM) platforms. Our mission is not only to develop high-performance avionics systems, but to manage the complexity behind them so pilots can focus on what matters most: Simply Flying.

We are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to provide technical leadership across the design and development of our complex avionics' platforms. This role is not about executing specifications; it is about defining them. You will shape electrical architecture, guide design decisions, and influence system-level outcomes from concept through certification and production.

WHY THIS ROLE IS DIFFERENT

At Avidyne, electrical engineering is not siloed.

Electrical, systems, mechanical, software, integration, test, and manufacturing teams work in tight coordination. With in-house manufacturing and integration located just steps from engineering, you will move from schematic to hardware to validation without layers of separation. You will see your designs built, tested, integrated, and ultimately flying.

Avidyne is an environment where engineering judgment matters. Decisions are made by those closest to the hardware and strong technical reasoning carries weight here.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Own Electrical Architecture
Define and guide board-level and subsystem-level electrical architecture across digital and mixed-signal designs. Ensure alignment with system requirements, performance targets, and safety expectations appropriate for avionics applications.

Lead Complex Hardware Development
Drive schematic capture, layout guidance, component selection, interface definition, and validation strategy for processor-based systems incorporating high-speed digital interfaces, memory, data buses, and FPGA integration.

Design for Flight-Critical Performance
Ensure designs meet the reliability, environmental, and certification expectations required for avionics platforms. Participate in design reviews with rigor and hold the bar high for execution quality.

Guide and Elevate the Team
Provide technical mentorship to engineers across experience levels. Establish strong engineering practices and help raise the standard of hardware development across the organization.

Close the Loop with Manufacturing & Test
Work directly with manufacturing and integration teams to debug, iterate, and refine hardware. Maintain tight feedback loops to continuously improve robustness and producibility.

Improve Engineering Operations
Refine workflows, tools, and processes to increase efficiency and technical clarity while maintaining high engineering standards.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (master's preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience designing and integrating PCB-based hardware systems.
  • Deep experience with digital processor-based systems, mixed-signal design, and complex interfaces.
  • Strong schematic and layout collaboration experience using modern ECAD tools (Altium preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technically, through architecture decisions, design reviews, and engineering influence.
  • Experience operating in regulated, high-reliability, or safety-critical environments is highly valued.
WHY AVIDYNE

We are large enough to build sophisticated, certified avionics systems and small enough that your decisions shape our products.

You will:

  • See your designs move from concept to production within the same facility.
  • Work in an engineer-led environment where technical credibility matters.
  • Contribute to hardware that ultimately flies.
  • Have access to flight training and the opportunity to earn your pilot's license thereby gaining firsthand perspective on the systems you help build.

We believe high standards and a sustainable pace are not mutually exclusive. Impact here comes from focused execution, strong collaboration, and respect for engineering craft. If you're ready to apply your experience where it carries visible weight and where the hardware you design ultimately leaves the ground, we'd welcome a conversation.
