Hardware Design Engineer Entry Level information

What does an entry-level hardware design engineer do?

An entry-level Hardware Design Engineer assists in designing, testing, and developing physical components for electronic devices and systems. They typically work with schematics, PCB layouts, and simulation tools to help bring hardware products from concept to prototype. These engineers often collaborate with senior engineers, troubleshoot hardware issues, and help ensure that designs meet performance and quality standards. Entry-level roles are a great way to gain hands-on experience and learn industry best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry-level hardware design engineer?

To thrive as an Entry-Level Hardware Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and problem-solving, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with CAD tools such as Altium Designer or OrCAD, and experience with hardware description languages (HDL) like VHDL or Verilog, are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, effective teamwork, and good communication skills help you collaborate efficiently and adapt to project challenges. These competencies are crucial for ensuring reliable hardware designs, smooth project execution, and successful integration within engineering teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by entry-level hardware design engineers when transitioning from academia to industry?

Entry-level Hardware Design Engineers often find the transition from academic projects to real-world product development to be a significant adjustment. In industry, projects typically involve stricter deadlines, larger teams, and the need to balance technical requirements with cost, manufacturability, and compliance standards. Learning to use industry-standard design tools, adapting to established workflows, and effectively communicating design changes within multidisciplinary teams can be challenging but are crucial for professional growth. Embracing feedback and seeking mentorship can help new engineers navigate these challenges successfully.

What is the difference between Hardware Design Engineer Entry Level vs Hardware Design Engineer?

AspectHardware Design Engineer Entry LevelHardware Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; internship experienceBachelor's or Master's degree; several years of experience
Work EnvironmentEntry-level positions in design teams, labs, or manufacturing settingsMid to senior-level roles with increased responsibilities
Employer & Industry UsageStart of career in electronics, consumer devices, or telecommunications companiesDesigning complex hardware for advanced electronics, aerospace, or automotive industries

In summary, a Hardware Design Engineer Entry Level is an entry-stage role requiring foundational education and limited experience, focusing on learning and supporting design tasks. A Hardware Design Engineer typically has more experience, handles complex projects, and takes on greater responsibilities within the hardware development process.

We are the #5 fastest growing company among the Silicon Valley Top 50 technology firms. Our unprecedented global expansion has provided us with the opportunity to offer a large number of new positions to the technology community. We seek talented, passionate, and committed engineers, technologists, and business leaders to join us.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Entry-Level Power DC-DC Hardware Engineer to join our server hardware engineering team. In this role, you will assist in the design, schematic capture, layout review, and lab validation of DC-DC power delivery circuits for server platforms. This position is ideal for an early-career engineer or recent graduate eager to build hands-on expertise in server board power architectures and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Includes the following essential duties and responsibilities (other duties may also be assigned):

  • Schematic Capture & Circuit Design: Design and capture schematics for server motherboard DC-DC power delivery circuits, point-of-load (POL) regulators, auxiliary power rails, and power management logic.
  • Component Sizing & Selection: Assist in active and passive component selection (MOSFETs, inductors, buck controllers, capacitors) and calculate power loss, ripple, and thermal margins.
  • Layout Review & Power Integrity: Work alongside PCB layout engineers to review board placement, routing, and high-current trace geometry to ensure low parasitic inductance, optimal ground return paths, and reliable power distribution.
  • Bench Bring-Up & Lab Testing: Perform hands-on bring-up, signal verification, and functional characterization of server power rails using oscilloscopes, DC electronic loads, programmable power supplies, and digital multimeters.
  • Performance Characterization: Execute standard power validation measurements, including power efficiency profiling, voltage ripple/noise, step-load transient response, power-up sequencing, and timing verification.
  • Cross-Functional Debug & Support: Assist in reproducing, isolating, and solving board- and system-level hardware defects alongside thermal, signal integrity, firmware, and validation teams.
  • Documentation & Data Analysis: Create and maintain power design documentation, bill of materials (BOMs), test procedures, validation reports, and issue-tracking logs.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, Power Electronics, or a closely related field.
  • Experience: 0-2 years of hardware development experience focusing on board-level power electronics, DC-DC converter design, or server/enterprise hardware platforms.
  • Technical Proficiencies:
      • Solid understanding of switch-mode power supply (SMPS) topologies, including synchronous buck converters, boost circuits, and POL power stages.
      • Hands-on proficiency with schematic capture and EDA design tools (e.g., Cadence Allegro Design Entry HDL / OrCAD Capture, Altium Designer).
      • Practical laboratory test and measurement skills using digital oscilloscopes, current probes, power meters, and electronic loads.
      • Familiarity with power management interfaces and buses (e.g., I2C, PMBus, GPIO-based power sequencing).
      • Basic knowledge of server power architectures, voltage regulator modules (VRMs), and power protection circuitry (OVP, OCP, UVP).
  • Communication & Collaboration: Self-motivated team player with strong analytical problem-solving skills, structured documentation habits, and effective verbal/written technical communication.
