What is hardscaping?

Hardscaping refers to the non-living elements of landscaping, such as patios, walkways, retaining walls, decks, and other built features made from stone, concrete, wood, or metal. These structures are designed to enhance the functionality and appearance of outdoor spaces. Hardscaping can improve property value, reduce yard maintenance, and help manage drainage and erosion. It is often combined with softscaping, which includes plants and other living elements, to create balanced and attractive landscapes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardscaping professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hardscaping Professional, you need strong knowledge of landscape construction, materials handling, and site planning, often supported by experience or relevant trade certifications. Familiarity with equipment such as skid steers, compactors, and laser levels, as well as safety standards, is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork help ensure high-quality installations and client satisfaction. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering durable, aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces that meet both safety and design standards.

What are some common challenges faced by hardscaping professionals and how can they be overcome?

Hardscaping professionals often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather, site-specific issues like uneven terrain, and the need to coordinate with other trades on a project. Overcoming these challenges typically involves thorough project planning, effective communication with team members and clients, and staying up-to-date with best practices for material installation and site preparation. Many hardscapers also find that ongoing training and certification can help them handle complex designs and new materials, leading to more successful project outcomes.

Job description

Director of Building ValueFull-Time
Building Value, an Easterseals Redwood social enterprise, is a leader in Cincinnatiโ€™s building materials reuse community. We create a triple- bottom- line impact: People, Planet, Profit, by preparing people who are under-represented in the construction trades for living-wage careers. We provide high-quality deconstruction and salvage services that keep reusable materials out of landfills. Salvaged, reclaimed, and donated building materials are resold through the Building Value Retail Store, extending our community impact while supporting the missions of Building Value and Easterseals Redwood.

This is a high-impact leadership role for someone who is energized by both mission and business performanceโ€”and who wants to make a visible difference in the Cincinnati region.
As Director, you will serve as a business leader, chief sales officer, and team builder. Your challenge will be to find a way to compete and win with a workforce that is less productive by design, given the agencyโ€™s workforce development mission. You will work with partners across construction, business, government, education, philanthropy, and human services while leading a collaborative management team responsible for daily operations and workforce development outcomes. This position reports to the Vice President of Social Enterprise.
What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Lead the management team to deliver strong business results while maximizing mission and workforce development impact.
  • Manage the overall profit and loss for Building Value, evaluating each business segment for profitability, sustainability, and growth potential.
  • Serve as the public face of Building Value with customers, partners, stakeholders, donors, community leaders, industry associations and networking groups to build visibility and support growth opportunities.
  • Lead business development efforts with Business Development Manager to identify prospects, cultivate relationships, convert opportunities into revenue, and ensure strong customer follow-through.
  • Develop and execute annual budgets, sales strategies, and marketing plans aligned with revenue goals, mission impact, and operational priorities.
  • Partner with the Building Value Construction Training team to advance mission effectiveness
  • Participate as a member of the Easterseals Redwood Directors and Leadership Team.
  • In partnership VP, lead Building Value Advisory Committee
What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • Proven business leadership experience, including responsibility for P amp;L performance, budgeting, revenue growth, and operational execution; construction or related industry experience preferred.
  • Proven success leading an entrepreneurial business unit or social enterprise with multiple revenue streams while balancing business performance, mission impact, and long-term sustainability.
  • A leadership style grounded in accountability, collaboration, clear communication, and the ability to motivate and develop teams.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to balance mission, financial performance, and operational realities.
  • A hands-on, resourceful leader who brings grit, urgency, and follow-through to problem-solving and execution.
  • Comfortable working across varied settings, including job sites, offices, the retail store, and community environments.
