What does a handyman do?

A Handyman is a skilled general repair and maintenance person. While a Handyman does not necessarily have certified expertise in any particular area, their strength is their versatility and general knowledge about all manner of repairs and maintenance. Handymen may work in commercial or residential settings making basic repairs to electrical, plumbing, and heating systems, installing fixtures, painting, and more. They manage all the odd jobs that are needed to keep a building running.

What is a handyman?

Handymen are skilled professionals who perform a variety of repair, maintenance, and installation tasks around homes and businesses. Their work can include fixing leaky faucets, repairing drywall, painting, assembling furniture, and handling minor electrical or plumbing issues. Handymen are versatile and can address a wide range of general maintenance needs, making them a convenient solution for small jobs that don’t require a specialized contractor.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a handyman, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Handyman, you need a solid understanding of general repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting across plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting tasks, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent experience. Familiarity with power tools, hand tools, and safety regulations, as well as optional certifications like OSHA, are commonly required. Problem-solving, reliability, and strong customer service skills help Handymen stand out in their interactions with clients. These combined abilities ensure tasks are completed efficiently, safely, and to the satisfaction of property owners or managers.

What types of work environments can a handyman expect, and how does this affect daily responsibilities?

Handymen often work in a variety of settings, including residential homes, commercial buildings, apartment complexes, and sometimes outdoor areas. This diversity means daily tasks can range from minor repairs and installations to routine maintenance and emergency fixes. The work environment may require frequent travel between job sites, adaptability to different client needs, and the ability to work independently or as part of a maintenance team. Flexibility and strong communication skills are essential, as handymen regularly interact with clients and coordinate with other tradespeople.

Job description

MASTER SEAL CRAFT

Field Sales Specialist – Reno & Northern Nevada

Full-Time  |  Field-Based  |  $100,000+ Target Compensation

You take pride in doing things right. You like working with your hands, you enjoy building real relationships, and you don’t need anyone looking over your shoulder. Reno is growing fast — and we’re growing with it. If that energy matches yours, keep reading.

WHO WE ARE

Master Seal Craft (MSC) keeps commercial kitchens running. We supply and install refrigeration gaskets, oven seals, door closers at restaurants, grocers, hospitals, schools, and fast food service operators. We service the seals and hardware that most people don’t think about — until it fails a health inspection.

Reno is one of the fastest-growing markets in the West — new restaurants, expanding hotel operations, and a food scene that’s evolving quickly. We’re building our presence here, and we need someone on the ground who can grow with it.

We’re a team that genuinely cares — about the craft, about our customers, and about each other. We stay hungry, we follow through, and we don’t cut corners.

THE ROLE

This isn’t a traditional sales job, and it’s not a traditional handyman gig either. It’s both — and that’s what makes it interesting.

As our Field Sales Specialist for the Reno region, you’ll own your territory end to end. You’ll get in front of kitchen managers, GMs, and hotel operators, take the time to actually understand what their operation needs, and personally install the solutions you recommend. You’re not handing anything off — you see it through from first conversation to finished installation.

You’ll work mostly in the field across the greater Reno-Sparks area, with periodic office check-ins and weekly Zoom calls with the owner.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Build genuine relationships with kitchen owners, GMs, and operators — listening first, recommending second
  • Generate your own leads through cold calls, walk-ins, and local networking, then follow through on every one
  • Personally install refrigeration gaskets, oven seals, door closers, and related hardware — with care and precision
  • Grow existing accounts by staying curious about what else your customers need — before they have to ask
  • Manage your pipeline and client records in our CRM — consistent, accurate, no gaps
  • Check in weekly with the owner — honest updates, real numbers, no surprises

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 3–5 years of B2B sales experience, ideally in food service, commercial kitchens, hospitality, or a related trade
  • Hands-on capability with tools — you take pride in installations done right, not just done fast
  • A “listen first” approach — you ask good questions, understand what’s actually needed, and earn trust by being straight
  • The drive to take initiative — you don’t wait to be told; you see what needs doing and do it
  • Dependability that speaks for itself — you say what you’ll do, and you do it, every time
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for daily field work

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

We built this comp plan to reward people who perform. Base salary covers your foundation; commission is where the real upside is.

  • Base Salary: $2,500–$3,500/month
  • Monthly Sales Incentive: $2,500–$7,000+/month uncapped
  • Target Total Comp at 100%: $100,000+ annually
  • Performance bonuses
  • Car & fuel allowance
  • Company-provided tools
  • Health insurance & retirement plan
  • Flexible, field-based schedule — you manage your day
  • Comprehensive technical and sales onboarding — we’ll give you what you need to succeed

WHY THIS OPPORTUNITY IS THE RIGHT ONE

Reno is attracting new businesses at a pace it hasn’t seen in years. That means new kitchens, new operators, and relationships that haven’t been established yet. You’ll be first through the door in a market that’s wide open, backed by an established brand and real support.

Anyone can promise great work. At Master Seal Craft, doing it right is something people here are proud of. If that resonates with you, you’ll fit right in.

Sound like you? We’d like to hear from you.

Apply today and let’s talk about what this role could look like for you.
