Job description

This is an exempt position and must adhere to the regulations stipulated in the Mount Marty University Employee Handbook. The Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Coach in directing a successful program and exercising supervision of the program (sport) in a manner which is in accordance with the philosophy, rules, and regulations of the university, the NAIA, and the GPAC.
Mission: To implement the university mission as an integral facet of the sport.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Recruiting
  • Assist the Head Coach in sustaining a roster of high quality and competency
  • Assist in the maintenance of official athletic documentation
  • Represent the university at appropriate community and sporting events

Budget and Supplies
  • Work with the Head Coach in preparing budgets and maintaining financial records
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding salary, budget, and grant information
  • Prepare requisition forms for equipment, uniforms, and supplies for approval by the Head Coach
  • Work with the Marketing Department on branding/logo use for all apparel and gear for approval by the Athletic Director

Eligibility - Events
  • Event Coaching: Provide event coaching coverage as determined by the Head Coach based upon current staff needs in conjunction with athletes and needed event coverage
  • Compliance: Support the requirement for all athletes to pass a physical examination before participating in practice or contests; inform student-athletes of eligibility, academic, and university standards
  • Academic Success: Monitor the academic progress of student-athletes and support their success
  • Transportation & Safety: Facilitate team travel by driving a 15-passenger van. The incumbent must maintain a current DOT physical on file and hold a valid CPR certification (required for large vehicle training course per NAIA rules)
  • Travel Logistics: Prepare and distribute travel itineraries to relevant departments (Athletic Director, Residence Life, Facilities, ATC, etc.) and coordinate with the Food Service Director regarding pre-game meal schedules
  • Media: Maintain and update social media and event results as mandated by the Athletic Director and Head Coach

Team Conduct
  • Supervise and assume responsibility for the dress and conduct of the athletes and others traveling with the squad
  • Ensure team members (athletes, managers) read, understand, and sign the MMU Code of Conduct and all NAIA/conference required papers
  • Assist student-athletes with their integration into the academic, spiritual, and social dimensions of the university
  • Keep the Head Coach and Athletic Director informed of outstanding performances, special awards, injuries, or discipline issues

Professional Standards
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with all university constituents
  • Exercise stewardship of university facilities and equipment
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures in the MMU Faculty/Staff Handbook and Athletic Policy and Procedure Manual

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree preferred with relevant coaching or competitive experience in Track and Field/Cross Country
  • Vehicle Operation: Ability to meet university driving standards for 15-passenger vans
  • Medical/Certification: Current DOT physical and CPR certification
  • Commitment to the mission of Mount Marty University

Performance Evaluation
Evaluated annually by the Head Coach and/or the Athletic Director.
