Job description

About PMA

Put your experience and talents to work in a role with a unique company - the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA). PMA is a non-profit mutual benefit corporation that serves as a multi-employer collective bargaining agent for approximately 75 shipping lines, stevedore companies and marine terminal operators at California, Oregon and Washington ports. West Coast port operations (including non-containerized cargo such as bulk and autos) now support 9 million U.S. jobs and contribute 12.5 percent of the U.S. GDP.

PMAโ€™s primary purpose is to negotiate and administer labor contracts with the International Longshore & Warehouse Union on behalf of the Associationโ€™s member companies, as well as administrating payroll and certain benefits. Our headquarters and administrative office is located in San Francisco, California, with area offices in Southern California (Long Beach, with satellite offices in Port Hueneme and San Diego) and the Pacific Northwest (Portland, Oregon and Seattle and Tacoma, Washington) in addition to Northern California (Oakland).

Position Summary

We are seeking a seasoned Oracle Database and Applications Administrator to join our IT team. This role requires deep experience managing Oracle systems in a Linux environment. You will be responsible for maintaining the performance, reliability, and security of PMAโ€™s Oracle infrastructureโ€”including Oracle RAC databases, EBS applications, and supporting systems. In addition to day-to-day operations, this position works closely with internal developers and business users to support evolving IT needs.

Please note: Candidates must be based in the San Francisco Bay Area and legally authorized to work in the United States. Sponsorship (including H1B) is not available for this role.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administer Oracle 19c RAC databases and Oracle EBS Applications (12.1/12.2: HR, Financials, Payroll), ensuring 24/7 availability.
  • Administer Oracle Engineered Systems (Exadata), Oracle App Servers, and Red Hat Linux servers/VMs running Tomcat, WebLogic, ORDS APEX, and other services.
  • Handle database user management, backup/recovery using RMAN and filesystem tools.
  • Manage Data Guard Standbys and perform environment cloning for QA/Dev.
  • Conduct installations, patching, and upgrades for Oracle databases and applications.
  • Monitor and tune database and application performance.
  • Manage Oracle WebCenter Content and other middleware applications.
  • Install and maintain Oracle clients and development tools on user machines.
  • Write utilities and scripts for automation, system health, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with developers for release management and custom code implementation.
  • Implement security protocols including encryption, obfuscation, and SSL.
  • Document procedures and manage operations playbooks.
  • Coordinate maintenance events (patches, upgrades, etc.).
  • Support audits by preparing documentation and evidence of compliance.
  • Work with vendors (Oracle, Red Hat, EMC, VMware, Nutanix) for issue resolution.
  • Provide support for business-critical applications outside the Oracle ecosystem.

Experience and Knowledge

  • 5+ years in Oracle database administration
  • Strong hands-on experience with Oracle 19c RAC architecture, Exadata, and Oracle EBS (12.1/12.2).
  • Skilled in Red Hat and Oracle Linux system administration.
  • Experience in Oracle EBS administration strongly preferred
  • Deep knowledge of high-availability setups including Data Guard, RAC, and RMAN.
  • Experience managing multi-terabyte databases and mission-critical systems.
  • Expertise in PL/SQL, shell scripting, and performance tuning.
  • Familiarity with multi-tenancy (CDB/PDB) architecture.
  • Experience with Oracle Cloud Platform preferred.
  • Understanding of database security, replication, encryption, and data masking.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills and documentation practices.
  • Oracle certifications and experience with Oracle Enterprise Manager are a plus.
  • Backup and DR knowledge using EMC; virtualization with VMware/Nutanix preferred.

Education

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in computer science or related field preferred.
  • Relevant technical certifications are highly desirable.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid work schedule based in San Leandro, CA.
  • Alternative work location: Portland, OR
  • Team-oriented culture with opportunities for professional growth.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required depending on project needs.

Physical Demands

  • Primarily office-based work, including extended periods of computer use.
  • Reasonable accommodationโ€™s available for individuals with disabilities.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage with minimal employee costs via ILWU-PMA Welfare Plan.
  • 401(k) plan with employer matching.
  • Tuition reimbursement for approved professional development programs.
