What is gym babysitting?

Gym babysitting is a service provided by fitness centers or gyms where staff members supervise and care for children while their parents or guardians work out. The babysitting area is typically a safe, designated space within the gym, offering toys, games, and activities to keep kids entertained. Staff are responsible for ensuring children's safety, engaging them in age-appropriate activities, and maintaining a secure environment. This service allows parents to exercise with peace of mind, knowing their children are being cared for nearby. Policies and age limits may vary by gym, so it's best to check with your local facility for specific details.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a gym babysitter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Gym Babysitter, you need experience working with children, basic first aid knowledge, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with check-in systems, communication tools, and child safety protocols is commonly required. Patience, strong communication, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are standout soft skills for this role. These qualifications ensure a safe, engaging, and reliable environment for children while parents use gym facilities.

What are some common challenges faced by gym babysitters, and how can they prepare for them?

Gym babysitters often manage children of various ages and temperaments, sometimes in a lively or unpredictable environment. Common challenges include keeping children engaged, handling minor conflicts, and ensuring safety in a shared play space. To prepare, it's helpful to have strong communication skills, knowledge of basic first aid, and a variety of age-appropriate activities ready. Familiarizing yourself with the gym's policies and emergency procedures is also important. Building rapport with both children and their parents can make transitions smoother and help address any concerns that arise.

Watch kids light up as they learn to do their first cartwheel - and build a career leading the team that makes it happen!
The Little Gym of La Grange Park is looking for a Gym Director who's spent real time working with kids - as a teacher, coach, camp counselor, nanny, or in early childhood education - and is ready to lead a team, run a business, and be the person parents trust every week.
This is a hands-on role. You'll be in the gym teaching classes, cheering on a shy 4-year-old's first jump, chatting with parents at pickup, and leading a team of instructors who feel the same way about kids that you do. You'll also run the business side: staffing, scheduling, and growth, working closely with ownership.
Job Summary
Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, inspire, and develop a team of enthusiastic instructors and staff members.
  • Create a positive, fun, and professional team culture built on teamwork and accountability.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, train, and coach team members.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and support to help your team reach their full potential.
  • Lead staff meetings and training sessions focused on program quality, customer experience, and team growth.
  • Work closely with ownership to identify opportunities, improve processes, and continue building a strong team culture.

Classes & Program Excellence
  • Teach fun, high-energy classes using The Little Gym's proven curriculum and teaching methods (we'll train you!).
  • Create a safe, encouraging, and confidence-building environment for children ages 4 months through 12 years.
  • Ensure every child and family receives an exceptional experience before, during, and after class.
  • Maintain the high-quality standards that make The Little Gym a trusted destination for families.
  • Support instructors in delivering engaging, age-appropriate, and memorable classes.

Gym Operations
  • Oversee the daily operations of the gym and ensure everything runs smoothly.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, organized, and welcoming facility.
  • Manage staff schedules to ensure excellent coverage and an outstanding customer experience.
  • Monitor equipment, supplies, and facility needs.
  • Partner with ownership on operational improvements, business goals, and new initiatives.
  • Track key performance indicators that support growth, retention, and overall gym success.

Membership Growth & Customer Experience
  • Welcome new families and help them discover the benefits of The Little Gym experience.
  • Provide outstanding customer service and build strong relationships with families.
  • Support enrollment growth through tours, introductory classes, camps, birthday parties, events, and community outreach.

You'd Be a Great Fit If You
  • Have hands-on experience working with kids - as an instructor, teacher, coach, camp counselor, nanny, or in childcare/early childhood education (this one's important to us).
  • Have leadership or management experience - in any industry (gymnastics, education, fitness, hospitality, retail, etc.).
  • Love high-fives, laughter, and seeing kids accomplish something new.
  • Are a natural leader who can be both fun and focused.
  • Have excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.
  • Love high-fives, laughter, and seeing kids accomplish something new.
