Job description

Senior Relay Technician

Flow Rite Thermal Services is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Relay Technician to join our Electrical Testing and Field Services team. This position is focused heavily on protective relay testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, and power system protection in industrial and commercial environments.

We are looking for someone who is more than just a field electrician, we need a technician with strong relay knowledge who understands protection schemes, switchgear testing, control circuits, and critical power system operations.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience testing and commissioning protective relays, troubleshooting electrical distribution systems, and working safely in energized industrial environments including plants, substations, manufacturing facilities, and heavy industrial sites.

Responsibilities

Perform commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and testing of protective relays and electrical power systems.

Conduct testing on low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical equipment including:

Protective relays

Switchgear

Circuit breakers

Transformers

CTs/PTs

Motor control systems

Configure and test SEL, GE Multilin, ABB, Siemens, Basler, and similar relay platforms.

Perform functional relay testing, trip checks, breaker timing, insulation resistance testing, and control wiring verification.

Interpret one-lines, elementary drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and protection drawings.

Troubleshoot relay operations, nuisance trips, breaker failures, and protection/control issues.

Generate accurate field reports, test documentation, and commissioning records.

Support planned outages, startup activities, emergency callouts, and field service projects.

Follow all OSHA, NFPA 70E, customer, and company safety requirements.

Maintain testing equipment, tools, and company vehicle in proper working condition.

Travel to customer and project sites throughout the region with occasional overnight stays.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.

Technical degree or electrical training preferred.

Minimum 5 years of experience in relay testing, electrical testing, commissioning, or power system protection.

Strong working knowledge of protective relay systems and relay logic required.

Experience with industrial electrical testing equipment such as Omicron, Doble, Megger, Vanguard, or equivalent.

Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical control and protection systems independently.

Experience working in industrial plants, substations, refineries, petrochemical facilities, or heavy industrial environments preferred.

NETA certification is a plus.

Strong understanding of electrical safety standards and energized work practices.

Valid driverโ€™s license with clean driving record.

Must be able to pass background screening and drug testing.
