Job description

Substance Use Counselor

Groups Recover Together is hiring a Substance Use Counselor to lead group therapy, support members in recovery, and collaborate with a dedicated care team. This role is ideal for a licensed clinician who wants to make a direct impact through compassionate, evidence-based care in a mission-driven environment.


About the role

As a Substance Use Counselor, you will be at the center of our member experience. You will lead structured group therapy sessions, help members build recovery skills, and partner closely with a multidisciplinary team to support meaningful progress. Your work will combine clinical skill, empathy, and consistency to help people move forward in their recovery journey.


What you will do

Lead 3–4 one-hour group therapy sessions each day using a structured, evidence-based curriculum.


Create a supportive and respectful group environment where members feel heard and encouraged.


Collaborate with prescribers, care navigators, recovery coaches, and other team members to support member success.


Monitor member engagement and progress, and adjust your approach to meet clinical and practical needs.


Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to high-quality, coordinated care.


Support a recovery-focused culture built on trust, accountability, and compassion.


What we are looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Active behavioral health licensure in Virginia including but not limited to: LPC, LCSW, CSAC, LSATP, LMFT and associate level status with ability and willingness to obtain licensure reciprocity in other states.
  • Experience leading Group Therapy.
  • At least 2 years of experience leading groups in a substance use treatment setting.
  • A strong understanding of evidence-based care and a commitment to clinical quality.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to connect with members in a meaningful way.
  • Comfort working in a collaborative environment with a shared focus on member outcomes.
  • Familiarity with EMRs, telehealth platforms, and Google Workspace is preferred.
