Ground Service Ramp Agent information

What is a ground service ramp agent?

Ground Service Ramp Agents are aviation professionals responsible for handling various tasks on the airport ramp, including loading and unloading aircraft, guiding planes to and from gates, and managing baggage and cargo. They ensure that aircraft are serviced quickly and safely between flights. Their duties also involve operating ground support equipment, performing aircraft de-icing, and maintaining safety standards on the tarmac. Ramp agents play a crucial role in maintaining on-time flight schedules and overall airport operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a ground service ramp agent?

To thrive as a Ground Service Ramp Agent, you need physical stamina, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent, often complemented by airport security clearance. Familiarity with ground service equipment, baggage handling systems, and safety protocols is typically required. Strong teamwork, clear communication, and the ability to work under pressure are essential soft skills for this role. These capabilities are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and timely aircraft turnaround in a demanding airport environment.

What challenges do ground service ramp agents face during peak travel seasons?

Ground Service Ramp Agents often experience increased workloads and tighter turnaround times during peak travel seasons. This can mean handling more baggage, coordinating closely with flight crews, and maintaining strict safety protocols despite a faster pace. Staying organized, communicating effectively with team members, and managing physical fatigue are essential to succeed during these busy periods. Employers typically provide additional training and support to help agents adapt to these seasonal demands.

What is the difference between Ground Service Ramp Agent vs Baggage Handler?

AspectGround Service Ramp AgentBaggage Handler
CredentialsHigh school diploma, safety training, sometimes certificationsHigh school diploma, safety training
Work EnvironmentAirport tarmac, aircraft, ground support areasAirport baggage claim, tarmac, baggage handling areas
Employer & IndustryAirlines, ground service companiesAirlines, baggage handling companies
Job ResponsibilitiesLoading/unloading luggage, aircraft servicing, safety checksHandling, sorting, and transporting baggage

Both roles are essential in airport operations, often working together to ensure luggage is safely loaded and unloaded. While Ground Service Ramp Agents have broader responsibilities including aircraft servicing, Baggage Handlers focus specifically on managing passenger luggage. Both jobs require safety training and are performed in similar airport environments, making them closely related but distinct in scope.

Are ground service ramp agents still getting paid?

Yes, ground service ramp agents continue to receive pay for their work, which typically includes shifts during early mornings, evenings, or overnight. Compensation varies by employer and location but generally involves hourly wages, with some positions offering benefits and overtime pay.

How much do ground service ramp agents make?

Ground service ramp agents typically earn an average hourly wage between $12 and $20, depending on experience, location, and employer. Annual salaries generally range from $25,000 to $40,000, with opportunities for overtime and tips in some cases. Certification in safety procedures and equipment operation can enhance earning potential.

Is it hard to get hired as a ground service ramp agent?

Getting hired as a ground service ramp agent can vary depending on the airline or company, but generally requires a high school diploma or equivalent, physical fitness, and the ability to pass background checks and drug tests. Prior experience is not always necessary, but good communication skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are important. Many positions are entry-level and may require training provided by the employer.

Job description

About Ramp
Ramp is building the smart infrastructure for finance teams, embedded in the transaction flow of every dollar a business spends. We automate how over $200B in annualized spend flows in and out of 70,000+ companies: authorizing payments, flagging risk, categorizing spend, and closing books.
The problems are high-stakes, data-dense, and unforgiving.
We hire people with high agency and high urgency. We look for slope over intercept. We care less about where you trained and more about what you've built. At Ramp, everyone is a builder who owns problems end to end and makes consequential decisions that shape the outcome.
The median Ramp customer saves 5% and grows revenue 16% in their first year - far in excess of businesses operating without Ramp. We believe every ambitious company deserves the same.
If you want to build systems that directly shape how companies move and manage billions, Ramp is the place to do it.
About the Role
The Engineering Platform team helps 300+ Ramp engineers move faster without breaking things. We work across the full software development lifecycle, including local development, CI/CD, testing, service frameworks, reliability, architecture, performance, and maintenance.
Platform engineers on this team do not wait for a roadmap to be handed to them. They find high-leverage problems, validate them with engineers and data, ship solutions, and iterate until those solutions are trusted, adopted, and durable.
Agentic development has expanded our mission. We are building the systems that let engineers and AI agents work together effectively in Ramp's large, complex codebases: clear abstractions, orchestration, reliable workflows, fast feedback loops, and strong guardrails are now even more important. These platform investments unlock agentic workflows that can plan, execute, test, review, and ship meaningful changes, helping every engineer and agent at Ramp maximize their impact.
What You'll Do
  • Improve Ramp's development workflows across CI/CD, testing, local development, code review, deploys, and remote environments.
  • Design paved paths for high-frequency engineering tasks, including service creation, migrations, reliable background jobs, and safe production changes.
  • Help Ramp's codebase and infrastructure scale by improving modularity, performance, reliability, and maintainability across our Python monolith, internal libraries, and database systems.
  • Identify repetitive or error-prone engineering workflows, then build automation that helps engineers and AI agents complete them faster, more consistently, and more safely.
  • Turn recurring sources of friction or risk into reusable systems, workflows, and defaults that teams actually adopt.

What We're Looking For
  • You think in systems across code, infrastructure, workflows, reliability, performance, and people.
  • You have built and led improvements to systems that make other engineers more effective, including developer tooling, CI/CD, test infrastructure, service frameworks, or large-scale codebase architecture.
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity and ownership. You can identify problems, align stakeholders, make tradeoffs, ship useful solutions, and iterate. You dive into whatever part of the tech stack or process is necessary to solve problems.
  • You understand that speed and quality go hand in hand: the best platforms make safe, high-quality engineering feel faster, not slower.
