Grocery Clerk Job Description:

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To provide stocking support for the Grocery Department and contribute toward ensuring a positive shopping environment for customers and a positive working environment for employees.

NATURE AND SCOPE: Primary emphasis in this position is on stocking and facing, straightening, load cutting, sorting and display building, in order to ensure maximum product availability and department sales. Primary learning challenge is product location and developing necessary production speed in cutting, sorting and stocking. This position requires ongoing walking, moderate to heavy lifting, operation of pallet jack, use of box cutter, judgment/decision making, social skills/verbal interaction, listening skills and reading. Position functions and work hours may vary according to business needs. Assignments and work direction are provided by the Grocery Manager or person in charge.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS
  • Perform aisle stocking, display building and maintenance
    • Complete assignments in allotted time
    • Properly sort stock and ensure correct placing and facing on shelf
    • Prepare location and cut, stock and face display product
    • Use proper case cutting technique
    • Ensure correct placement of stock
    • Restock, rotate and face product
    • Work display to shelf items
  • Perform cutting and sorting of grocery stock loads
    • Complete assignments in allotted time
    • Handle and cut cases properly to avoid product damage
    • Work overstock
    • Sort stock by aisle, load onto cart or pallet in stable manner and move to correct aisle
    • Maintain production counts by pallets and/or cases
  • Perform clean up of sales floor or backroom
    • Pick up and compacts cardboard, stack pallets, clean up spills, store overstock, dispose of used razor blades in proper receptacles
    • Return misplaced items or merchandise to shelf (shop back)
    • Handle damaged items appropriately
  • Assist customers with product location and price checks
    • Answer questions and/or assist customers with product location. Take customers directly to the item they are looking for
    • Refer customers to the proper area or individual for help
  • Miscellaneous
    • Answer all department phone calls in a timely and consistent manner
    • Assist with product resets
    • Assist clerks with price checks and product replacement
    • Occasionally help out in other departments
  • Follow all store and department policies and procedures
