Graphic Design Lab Assistant information

What is a graphic design lab assistant?

Graphic Design Lab Assistants are support staff who help maintain the smooth operation of graphic design labs in educational or creative settings. They assist students and faculty with equipment, software, and technical issues, ensuring that lab resources are accessible and functioning properly. Lab assistants may also help with organizing materials, troubleshooting hardware or software problems, and maintaining a safe and productive work environment. Their role is essential in fostering a supportive space for creativity and learning in graphic design.

What does a graphic design lab assistant do?

As a Graphic Design Lab Assistant in a university, you'll frequently help students navigate design software, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure lab equipment is properly maintained. You may also assist faculty with preparing instructional materials or demonstrations, and help enforce lab policies to create an effective learning environment. Collaboration is key in this role, as you'll interact closely with both students and instructors while managing multiple tasks and staying up-to-date on design technology.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a graphic design lab assistant?

To thrive as a Graphic Design Lab Assistant, you need a solid understanding of design principles, familiarity with graphic design software, and often an associate degree or coursework in graphic design. Proficiency in tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and experience with digital printing or lab equipment are typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help support students and maintain an efficient lab environment. These abilities ensure smooth lab operations, assist users effectively, and uphold a high standard of creative work.

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN
  • Real client-facing design experience across multiple industries and brands
  • Direct mentorship from experienced marketing and creative professionals
  • Exposure to how design, marketing strategy, and business goals connect

  • Basic familiarity with PowerPoint/Google Slides and an interest in web design principles
  • Strong organizational skills and comfort managing a few projects at once
  • A proactive, collaborative attitude and genuine interest in growing a design career
  • A portfolio or sample work you're proud to share (school projects welcome)
