Job description

General Summary

Under the supervision of the site medical director and office manager, the Graduate Medical Assistant is responsible for providing medical support to the providers.  Access to information will be limited to that which is necessary to complete daily tasks in accordance with all HIPAA regulations.
Requirements:

  1. Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant, L.P.N., or R.N. program (must provide proof of graduation before start) who has not yet completed certification or registration process or applicable exam. Note: certification or registration must be obtained within 120 days of hire (provide proof to manager within 90 days).
  2. If certification or registration is not obtained within 120 days, the Graduate Medical Assistant employment can be terminated with eligibility to rehire unless there are other performance factors that would make the employee not eligible for rehire.
  3. Skills:  Working knowledge of medical terminology and CPT/ICD-9 codes.  Working knowledge of medical office daily operations.  Working knowledge of Universal Precautions.  Typing skills with computer background.  Good communication skills in both verbal and written form.  The desire for more responsibility.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Review with the patient and document their vital medical information (such as allergies), physical and emotional condition.  This includes but is not limited to patient vital signs, height, weight and subjective complaint(s).  This information will then be documented in the Electric Medical Record and communicated to the physician.
  2. Provide support and assistance to the physician during patient examinations and procedures.
  3. Interpretation and implementation of the provider's recommended "orders" (i.e. laboratory, etc.).
  4. Complete documentation and charting of all clinical test results.
  5. Obtain any requested lab specimens and the processing of those specimens either internally in the office based lab or externally when required.  Completion of any in office testing (i.e. EKG, holter monitor, etc.), that is required.
  6. Assist the physician's with the administration of medications or the actual administration of the medication according to their directions as necessary.
  7. Assist the patient in scheduling any follow-up, referrals, or future office appointments as necessary.
  8. Sterilize instruments, including monthly spore checks as well as maintain appropriate proficiency testing and internal controls.
  9. Maintain diagnostic equipment and report any malfunction to the Enterprise Office Manager and/or Clinical Engineering as appropriate.
  10. Receive and organize the handling of medication samples.
