Your Opportunity
Stantec's Multi-modal Planning team in North Carolina is seeking an urban planner to work with senior staff as part of a multi-disciplinary design team including planners, urban designers, mobility experts, landscape architects, architects, civil engineers, and other technical experts on a wide variety of projects with public and private entities. Our clients include local, state and federal agencies, large institutions, and private developers.
The Urban Planner will work locally on a variety of traditional urban planning and transportation projects that could include strategic plans, downtown vision/master planning, bike/pedestrian network plans, corridor studies, and design guidelines, among others. Candidates will also work closely with one of Stantec's North American Infrastructure initiatives called Smart(ER) Mobility, which focuses on innovative solutions through the lens of [E]quity and [R]esilience. These projects could include Transit-oriented Development and Mobility Hub planning and design, policy plans for Advanced Air Mobility, Safety Action Plans, First/Last Mile designs to transit stations, Complete Street design, program management for local and state transit authorities, and automated vehicle studies. Candidates with a combination of strong writing and graphics skills, research and analytical capabilities, and experience with urban design and/or transportation projects are strongly encouraged to apply. The Urban Designer/Transportation Planner must be able to work independently and with a team of multi-disciplinary professionals and be open to working on virtual teams across the globe.
Your Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams of planners, designers, engineers, and specialists on a variety of projects.
  • Contribute to all phases of projects including visioning, analysis, planning, design, public engagement, and final production.
  • Create drawings and graphics including maps, diagrams, sketches, renderings, and 3D models.
  • Assist with research, data collection, and analysis for use in planning, design, policy development, and implementation.
  • Prepare presentation quality materials for client exhibits, in-person and online community engagement events, public presentations, and plan documents for online and hard copy publication.
  • Work directly with clients and team members to develop and help implement policies, plans, and design projects.

Qualifications - External
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Knowledge and understanding of the process, tools, and techniques of urban/transportation planning.
  • Excellent graphic, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent research and analysis skills with qualitative and quantitative data relevant to urban/transportation planning and design.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office Suite. Strong working knowledge of Rhinoceros/SketchUp and/or other 3D visualization software is a plus.
  • A passion for placemaking, walkability, sustainability, resilience, and innovation in urban/transportation design and planning.
  • Experience with the production of planning reports and documents and a thorough knowledge and familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to engage effectively with a wide variety of clients and stakeholders, including virtually and in-person.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work within flexible schedules and a hybrid of in-person and work-from-home office environments.
  • Ability and desire to travel.
  • Location in Charlotte, NC is preferred.

  • A graduate degree in Urban Design, Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field.
