What does a graduate subsea engineer do?

A Graduate Subsea Engineer assists in the design, installation, and maintenance of underwater equipment and systems used in the oil and gas industry. They work with senior engineers to ensure subsea structures, such as pipelines and control systems, are safe, reliable, and efficient. Their role often involves site visits, technical analysis, and problem-solving to address challenges unique to underwater environments. Graduate Subsea Engineers also collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and contribute to project planning and execution.

What are some typical projects or tasks a graduate subsea engineer can expect to work on during their first year?

As a Graduate Subsea Engineer, you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects such as supporting the design, installation, and maintenance of subsea equipment like pipelines, control systems, and wellheads. Early in your role, you’ll often assist senior engineers with technical documentation, data analysis, and site surveys, while gaining hands-on experience through rotations between office-based engineering and offshore assignments. Collaboration is key, as you'll work closely with multidisciplinary teams—including mechanical, electrical, and project engineers—to ensure that subsea systems are installed and operated safely and efficiently. This exposure offers a solid foundation for technical growth and future specialization within the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate subsea engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate Subsea Engineer, you need a degree in engineering (such as mechanical, marine, or electrical) along with a solid understanding of subsea systems and technologies. Familiarity with industry-specific software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and subsea analysis tools, as well as knowledge of offshore safety standards, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective teamwork, and good communication are crucial soft skills in this multidisciplinary environment. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and innovative subsea solutions in challenging offshore conditions.

What is the difference between Graduate Subsea Engineer vs Subsea Engineer?

AspectGraduate Subsea EngineerSubsea Engineer
QualificationsTypically recent engineering graduates with foundational knowledgeExperienced engineers with specialized subsea skills
Work EnvironmentTraining projects, entry-level tasks, supervised rolesProject design, installation, maintenance in offshore environments
Industry UsageEntry-level positions in oil & gas, renewable energyOperational roles in subsea systems and infrastructure

The main difference is experience level: Graduate Subsea Engineers are recent graduates starting their careers, while Subsea Engineers are experienced professionals handling complex projects. Both roles work in offshore environments within the oil, gas, or renewable sectors, but the Graduate Subsea Engineer is in a learning phase, often under supervision, whereas the Subsea Engineer takes on more responsibility and technical tasks.
