Job description
Summary
This position provides the on-site leadership for the third- and fourth-year medical students program of the Midland Regional Campus of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (MSU-CHM). The Community Assistant Dean (CAD) is responsible for maintaining collegial working and educational partnerships with MyMichigan Health (MMH) and local and regional health systems, as well as other educational programs sharing resources. The CAD will administer the medical student education program, manage the community campus team, assure compliance with accreditation requirements, advise students in career and professional development, recruit and support community faculty, work toward advancing inclusion and diversity and responding to the needs of the underserved, and develop community resources to support the undergraduate medical program.
The CAD is a 0.5 FTE position, employed by MyMichigan Medical Group (MMG) on behalf of MSU-CHM, and as such reports to the Chief Academic Officer of MyMichigan Health in matters related to human resources and other working policies of MMH and coordination of MMH system educational resources, while reporting to the Associate Dean, Community Academic Programs, MSU-CHM, for oversight of curriculum, instructional quality, and other MSU-CHM and university student and institutional policies and functions (see below)
Responsibilities
(85%) Serves as the MSU-CHM chief academic officer for its Midland Regional Campus, specifically responsible for:
- Administering, directing, and coordinating the medical student education program as consistent with the academic policies of the college and university
- Responsible for assuring compliance with accreditation requirements, completing information requests as part of the continuing accreditation process and participating as appropriate in accreditation preparation and site visits
- Advising students in career and professional development in both group and individual settings
- Preparation of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation for submission with student application for residency programs
- Administering, directing, and coordinating programs and activities designed to facilitate and support medical students
- Implementing college policies for student and program evaluation and review
- Implementing the department, college, university policies for community faculty recruitment, appointment, review, promotion, and retention
- Representing the college and facilitating inter-community communication and developing cooperative relationships among campuses, faculty, and programs, to support the undergraduate medical education program
- Identifying and developing community resources to support the undergraduate medical education program, including developing and maintaining collegial working and educational partnerships with MyMichigan Health, other local and regional health systems, and other educational programs sharing educational resources
- Developing and implementing programs to enhance the educational resources of the community-based faculty
- Facilitating the development and/or maintenance of university-community relationships in graduate medical education to support the undergraduate medical education program
- Supervising and directing the administrative staff and faculty of the regional campus, Student Program Administrator and faculty of the community who are charged with the implementation of MSU-CHM academic policies
- Participating in college administrative and faculty committees that are charged with the development and/or implementation of academic policies
- Administering, directing, and coordinating the financial resources from the college in a responsible and fiscally-sound manner
- Representing the college in creating research-related activities and appropriate clinical and community partnerships
- Collaborate with directors of certificate programs in the community to integrate required academic programs with certificate activities
- Support the work of the MSU-CHM external relations department in fostering engagement with local and regional community organizations
- Participate in MSU-CHM committees, MyMichigan Health committees (including GMEC and CME)
The CAD, while representing and conducting activities on behalf of MSU-CHM, is an employee of MyMichigan Health, through the MyMichigan Medical Group. As the lead person in the MSU-CHM office on campus, they are ultimately responsible for administering and supervising the following positions (including ensuring compliance with human resources and other MyMichigan policies, and in some instances, compiling an annual job performance review as noted) within the office of the Midland Regional Campus:
- Student Program Administrator (SPA) (1.0 FTE)
- The SPA has direct oversight of clerkship assistants (2 FTE) and the Rural Community Health Program (R-CHP) Coordinator (0.5 FTE)
- Community assistant dean responsible for completing annual MMH job performance review of the SPA
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Attends MSU-CHM committee meetings in East Lansing or Grand Rapids as scheduled, other MSU-CHM, MyMichigan Health, and campus office meetings on-site at MyMichigan Health - Midland
Travel requirement (no more than 5%) to attend meetings and interact with faculty, health system, and other partners in state, outside of Midland
Certifications and Licensures

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
A dual reporting relationship exists for the Community Assistant Dean position:
This position will have a matrix structure and as an employee of MyMichigan, reports to the Chief Academic Officer of the health system for human resources, operational issues, and other related functions (including supervision of personnel within the MSU-CHM office at the Midland Regional Campus),
Additionally, for academic and student and faculty issues, curriculum, and other MSU-CHM or university policy issues, to the Associate Dean for Community Academic Programs, MSU-CHM
Academic department appointment and rank will be determined by MSU-CHM based upon qualifications and experience
Demonstrated dedication to student success and effectiveness working with students at a variety of performance levels
Collaborative approach to academic governance and experience working with faculty teams
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups, and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; attention to detail. Strong organizational skills, time and stress management skills. Capable of making decisions independently and possessing good problem solving skills.
Ability to accept responsibility and maintain confidential information. Knowledge of FERPA guidelines.
Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with medical students, faculty physicians, all levels of administrative staff, residents physicians and other student affairs/academic personnel.
Strong interpersonal/communication skills.
Able to work independently.
