Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the Association Head Swim Coach & the Aquatics Director, the Assistant Swim Coach provides excellent customer service while managing the swim team and assisting with the production of a quality swim team program. The Assistant Swim Coach creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with the YMCA of Coastal Carolina policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Perform assigned coaching responsibilities, including practices, recruiting, recordkeeping and scheduling.
  2. Lead swimmers through skill mastery and swim practices to achieve higher level of technique.
  3. Teach participant how to perform skills correctly. Design tailored workouts for the various levels of abilities and strengths using the YMCA of Coastal Carolinaโ€™s Swim Team Progression Plan.
  4. Coordinate and set up swim meets. Collaborate with parents and members to secure volunteers to assist in running swim meets.
  5. Supervise swim meets, including warm-ups, practice dives, etc., to ensure the safety of the swimmers.
  6. Communicate practice times and schedules with the Welcome Center staff, members, and program parents.
  7. Greet and develop effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  8. Assist in the retention of existing members and engagement of new members by informing them of the additional programs offered to them through the YMCA of Coastal Carolina membership.
  9. Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  10. Know, understand and consistently apply safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  11. Know and review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with the YMCA of Coastal Carolinaโ€™s policies and procedures.
  12. Demonstrates commitment to the YMCA of Coastal Carolinaโ€™s strategic plan and Vision 2030 priorities.
  13. Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  14. Ensure a culture of inclusion that builds and celebrates diversity within the Y and our communities.
  15. Know and review all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with the YMCA of Coastal Carolin policies and procedures
  16. Attending all staff meetings and training courses as required.
  17. Perform other related duties as assigned by your supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous swim experience preferred.
  • Previous customer service experience preferred
  • Current YMCA Swim Coach or USA Swim Coach certification required.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification required.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with excellent follow through.
  • Desire and ability to work with people of all ages.
  • Must exhibit patience, sensitivity and understanding.

  • May be require to work outdoors for extended periods of time. May be exposed to extreme outdoor weather conditions and temperatures and to wet and/or humid conditions in swimming pool areas.
  • Must always be alert, keeping safety in mind. Must possess acceptable hearing and visual capabilities to monitor environment and membersโ€™ well-being.
  • Must possess auditor, verbal and visual capabilities to adequately communicate via phone and in person.
