What are grading jobs?
What is the difference between Grading vs Quality Control Inspector?
| Aspect | Grading | Quality Control Inspector |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Focus | Assessing and classifying products based on quality standards | Inspecting products to identify defects and ensure compliance |
| Required Credentials | Often no formal certification, but knowledge of standards | Certifications like ISO or industry-specific quality certifications |
| Work Environment | Manufacturing, agriculture, or food industries | Manufacturing, production lines, or warehouses |
| Employer Usage | Used by companies to categorize product quality levels | Used to detect defects and enforce quality standards |
While both roles focus on quality, Grading primarily involves classifying products based on quality standards, whereas Quality Control Inspectors actively examine products for defects and compliance. Grading is more about categorization, while Quality Control is about defect detection and correction.

What are grading jobs?
Grading jobs involve preparing the ground for a construction project. You use heavy equipment and tools to level the land so that crews can build a structure or roadway. Your duties include using a cut and fill process to level uneven ground. A grading equipment operator uses bulldozers, backhoes, and rollers to excavate and move land and pack it down to create a stable, even surface. A grading or excavation foreman oversees the operation. Some laborers in this field use self-propelled, hand-controlled graders to tamp down the ground. Graders also shape shoulders, ditches, and other features to ensure proper drainage.

Qualified candidates will have a minimum of 5 years (preferably more) relevant experience in fields such as construction management, civil engineering, or surveying. Priority will be given to candidates who are experienced with civil site projects and construction activities and on a professional licensure track (PE, PS, BCSP, PMP, or similar).

Project elements typically include grading and earthwork, site access, erosion control, stormwater management, utility routing, project reports and notes, and other documentation to support the client's permitting and construction efforts. Field tasks include confirming that materials, grading, and other elements conform to the engineering plans; collecting information from the field and creating status reports for the client; and coordinating with design engineer, survey staff, contractors, and other team members to ensure construction proceeds smoothly and potential problems are identified and addressed quickly. The ratio of office-to-field hours will vary by project schedules and needs, but is anticipated to average approximately 75% office-based work.
What You Will Do:
- Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D to help produce engineering plans and exhibits.
- Work with engineering and survey professionals to fulfill site civil and underground utility-related tasks.
- Manage individual project phases such as survey, pre-construction, construction support and As-Built phases.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to support project objectives (scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, client satisfaction) in accordance with established metrics.
- Develop or improve technical expertise in site/civil design and construction, hydrology/hydraulics, erosion and sedimentation control, slope stability, underground utilities, and stormwater management.
- Primarily support projects through construction and as-built activities, including helping to establish workflows and schedules, attending client meetings and site visits, assisting with data collection and analysis, troubleshooting processes, documentation, and collaborating to successfully resolve issues.
- Perform quality control checks (QA/QC) on construction plan sets, materials calculations, shop drawings, grading, and other civil construction elements.
- Confirm on-site materials match engineering plans and shop drawings. Work with surveyors to schedule checks and confirm grading matches engineering plans. Ensure a high level of quality is achieved during the construction process and any deviation from plans or design is resolved to the satisfaction of client and design engineer.
- Identify, document, and collaboratively work with project team to resolve any issues that arise during civil construction efforts.
- Provide coaching and training to less-experienced staff. This may include both formal content in a classroom or office setting as well as mentoring and supervision in the field.
What You Will Bring:
- Minimum 5 years of relevant field and office experience (more is better).
- Ability to work proficiently with AutoCAD Civil3D, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite or other relevant office-based skills.
- Strong ability to communicate thoughts and concepts with team members from diverse backgrounds, including willingness to learn and work collaboratively across multiple teams and disciplines.
- Solid understanding of civil engineering plan concepts, calculations, and information, including ability to read, understand, and apply them in a field setting.
- Good oral and written reporting and documentation abilities, including writing trip notes, field reports, and other project records.
- Current driver's license and ability to drive to project construction sites.
- Be physically able to safely inspect active construction sites, including walking on uneven ground, avoiding site hazards, and exposure to heat/cold/other weather conditions.
- Strong preference for education, certifications, and professional experience in engineering, survey, construction management, HSE, or related field that adds value to the project team and overall program.
- Relevant training and certifications is a plus (e.g. OSHA 30, EI, PE, PS, etc.).
