Title: Geologist III
Schedule (FT/PT): Regular Full Time

North Wind Site Services is focused on providing engineering, program management, environmental remediation services including investigation and characterization, environmental restoration, unexploded ordnance/military munitions response (MMRP), regulatory public involvement services, environmental compliance, logistics, and records and facility management.
POSITION PURPOSE:

This Scientist/Geologist shall provide support for our environmental investigation and remediation projects at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify and log soils and conditions encountered in the field to coordinate drilling activities and field decisions.
  • Evaluate geological conditions in situ for field decisions in concurrence with associated technical advisors.
  • Evaluate historical data and geologic conditions for sample planning and ultimately risk/nature and extent determination.
  • Assuring quality of field data and written deliverables and achievement of project schedule to the client's satisfaction and contractual compliance.
  • Authoring scientific reports for review and approval by governmental and regulatory agencies.
  • Evaluation and interpretation of scientific data; statistical analyses, and technical writing; using relational databases and scientific software to manage and report analytical and other field data.
  • Preparing charts, graphs, maps, tables, and statistical analyses. Reviewing and proofing scientific reports. Addressing and resolving comments from technical and regulatory experts.
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of project plans to identify and delineate chemicals of concern in soil, sediment, groundwater.
  • Supporting and overseeing environmental field activities, evaluating field documentation, identifying discrepancies, and controlling data generation processes.
  • Assuring quality of field data and written deliverables and achievement of project schedule to the client's satisfaction and contractual compliance.
  • Assisting in developing more junior staff in technical and consulting excellence.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collect data and samples in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Collects and documents soil, air, and/or water samples to determine presence and quantity of contaminates.
  • Prepares sample for testing, records in situ data, and logs daily activities.
  • Utilize Hand Auger and Little Beaver to collect sub-surface soil samples.
  • Field duties will include Direct Push Technology, Hollow Stem Auger, and Roto-Sonic drilling rig oversight.
  • Office duties include data management and documentation organization.
  • Participate in field efforts as needed to support the successful execution of projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:

  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in Geology or Geological Sciences or other closely related field
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years of relevant experience working as a Geologist or Environmental Scientist.
  • Demonstrated experience writing technical plans and reports for regulatory review.
  • Practical, hands-on experience conducting environmental field work for site characterization and/or remediation projects.
  • Knowledge and experience with various media (e.g., soil vapor, groundwater), contaminants, and standard operating procedures for investigation and corrective action.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to analyze project needs and establish appropriate project priorities.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate technical environmental data to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Ability to drive a pick-up truck and/or transit van.
  • Ability to manage field projects with extensive customer contact.
  • Able to manage and partner with field subcontractors.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management, staff, and clients, as well as outside business associates.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively present information and respond effectively and sensitively to questions from clients, managers, staff and the general public.
  • Ability to utilize multiple word-processing and database applications including MS Office applications Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Demonstrated ability to work accurately, follow procedures and schedules, and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Excellent proof-reading and writing skills.
  • High degree of sensitivity regarding confidential client and employee information.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, and make decisions, solve problems, exercise good judgment, work under pressure, and capable of prioritizing workload.

Special Requirements:

  • Must pass pre-employment background check.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug testing.
  • Must have a valid driver license.
  • Ability to pass U.S. Government employment background check and acquire U.S. Government Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential card.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working on projects for Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, or other federal agencies.
  • Working knowledge of the CERCLA and/or RCRA regulatory processes for facility investigation and corrective action.
  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER
  • OSHA 30 Hour

The employee is often required to use hands or fingers to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to stand for long periods and walk across uneven terrain.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The work is conducted both indoors and outdoors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is normally mild to moderate. The employee will be exposed to moving mechanical equipment, machinery, and vehicles.
