Job description

Midwest Shoe Merchants is looking for a detail-oriented Accounting Assistant to join our Corporate Office in New Berlin. This is more than a traditional accounting role-you'll support our financial operations while also serving as the welcoming face of our corporate office.
Each day brings a mix of responsibilities, from processing invoices and reconciling store reports to greeting visitors, supporting front-office activities, and supporting teams across our family of retail brands. If you enjoy variety, thrive in an organized environment, and take pride in accuracy and customer service, we'd love to meet you.
What the Role Looks Like
Accounting & Financial Support
You'll help ensure our financial records remain accurate and up to date by:
  • Processing vendor invoices and verifying coding, approvals, and supporting documentation.
  • Reconciling daily store sales reports, deposits, and financial records.
  • Assisting with month-end and year-end accounting activities.
  • Supporting financial reporting, audits, and inventory reconciliation.
  • Working with vendors and store teams to resolve discrepancies and obtain missing documentation.

Front Office & Administrative Support
You'll help create a professional and welcoming corporate office by:
  • Greeting visitors, vendors, and guests as they arrive.
  • Receiving and distributing incoming mail and deliveries.
  • Coordinating office supply inventory and replenishment for the corporate office and store locations.
  • Serving as a helpful point of contact for internal departments and external partners.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
You'll work closely with our Accounting Manager and teams throughout the company to:
  • Prioritize multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Support store operations, merchandising, and other corporate departments.
  • Communicate professionally with stores, vendors, and coworkers.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and office efficiency.
  • Maintain the highest standards of confidentiality, professionalism, and accuracy.

What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who enjoys both accounting and administrative work and takes pride in keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes.
Successful candidates will have:
  • An Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent accounting experience.
  • Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Google Workspace.
  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • A professional, welcoming demeanor when interacting with employees, vendors, and visitors.

Experience in retail, multi-location organizations, financial reconciliations, or inventory processes is a plus, but not required.
Compensation & Benefits
Starting Pay: $18.00-$20.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
We offer a comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees, including:
  • Health, Dental & Vision Insurance
  • Pet Insurance
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation & Sick Time)
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • 401(k)
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Generous Employee Discount
  • Race Fee Reimbursement

Why Midwest Shoe Merchants?
