Gnu information

What are Gnu?

Gnu, also known as wildebeest, are large antelopes native to Africa. They are known for their distinctive appearance, with robust bodies, shaggy manes, and curved horns. Gnu are famous for their annual migration across the Serengeti and Maasai Mara, which is one of the largest and most spectacular animal migrations in the world. They play an important role in their ecosystem, serving as prey for large predators and helping to maintain grassland habitats.

How does a Gnu Software Developer typically collaborate with open-source communities on large projects?

As a Gnu Software Developer, you'll often work alongside a diverse, global community of contributors. Collaboration typically takes place through mailing lists, version control platforms like Git, and online forums, where you’ll discuss bugs, propose features, and review code. Effective communication and a willingness to receive and give constructive feedback are key, since many projects are community-driven and rely on consensus. Participating in these communities also provides valuable networking, mentorship, and learning opportunities, which can significantly enhance your career growth.

Job description

Company Description

iFLIP4 is the brand and network for people who care. Our brand, called The Charitable Brand, donates over half of its profits to the charity of your choice. Our network is the place you go to learn about the issues that plague our planet, and to discover the solutions to them. iFLIP4 educates. It inspires. It empowers, all in the name of the world's greatest causes--and the best part: it's driven by you.

We have been featured in the New York Post and we are the recipients of the C.V. Starr Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship.

We have hundreds of iFLIP4 Ambassadors (campus representatives) on 50+ college and high school campuses in the US, UK, and Canada and has been visited by over 140+ different countries.

Some of our advisors include a former Treasurer of IBM, a media expert who helped launch MTV, a Fulbright winning law professor, and a senior advertising executive in charge of $250 million of ad sales at Yahoo.

Job Description

We want to change the world. We're a team of fast-executing social entrepreneurs on a mission to build the future of social change. You want to change the world? This is your chance!

We're not looking for someone to do busy work or implement another Rails app. We are searching for an outstanding back end developer to build our business with! We want someone who sees iFLIP4 in its Beta stages, and who can envision a future where it is the place to go for EVERYONE who cares. We want someone who wants to create the future, not someone who will settle for an unfulfilling position at a giant corporation.

We don't want a code monkey; we don't want someone to say yes and implement every feature we ask for. What we want is a partner. Someone to bounce ideas off of, someone with a vision for the future of our company, and someone who has the desire and drive to make it a reality.

Importantly, the most driven, high performing interns will be given the opportunity to take on full time roles after we raise our Angel round of funding.

Responsibilities

  1. Maintain and update the current Beta website on a regular basis

  2. Support our current functional design, and help build code from scratch to support new, world-changing product features

  3. Create modules for ExpressionEngine

  4. Implement various API's as needed

  5. Author technical documentation with high level design documents

  6. Work closely with our product and design teams to define feature specifications

Technical Requirements

  1. Obtained or working towards MS/BE/BTech degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or other technical field preferred

  2. Strong coding and scripting ability on LAMP platform (PHP 5+, OOP PHP)

  3. Solid GNU/Linux experience

  4. Expert in ExpressionEngine (our CMS platform), and the ability to build add-ons & modules for ExpressionEngine

  5. Solid database experience. MySQL preferred

  6. Proven ability to work effectively across multiple teams

  7. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  8. CodeIgniter knowledge a plus

  9. Experience with Cloud Computing a plus

This position requires a commitment of about 20 hours/week. After we raise our Angel round of funding, this role can grow into a full-time position with a full salary and equity in iFLIP4, assuming the work you do is great! We are located in East Hanover, NJ, and telecommuting is fine with us.
