About GMA

GMA Foundations (GMA) helps funders define and reach their philanthropic goals with expert advice and comprehensive services. We are a trusted ally and a guide to greater impact, meaning, and efficiency. Our mission is rooted in our belief in the transformative nature of philanthropy, that each of us in this field has the capacity to help shape a more just and equitable future.

Since becoming employee-owned in 1982, collaboration and inclusivity have been central to our culture. We foster an optimistic, open workplace where curiosity is welcomed, learning is shared, and a shared commitment to philanthropy brings us together. We are dedicated to helping every team member grow and build a meaningful, lasting career in the field.

Position Summary

GMA seeks a Director of Communications and Marketing to lead the firm’s communications and brand efforts in support of thoughtful, relationship-driven growth. This part time leadership role reports to the Co-Managing Director of Strategy. The Director will shape how GMA shows up in the field by clarifying our voice, strengthening our reputation, and enabling colleagues to represent the firm with confidence and consistency.

The Director is responsible for translating strategic priorities into communications and relationship-building practices that increase visibility, deepen connections, and support lead development. The Director collaborates across the firm to strengthen GMA’s outreach and visibility while ensuring clear, consistent messaging and approaches.

This is a hands-on role—leading strategy and producing core communications, and supporting the firm’s revenue goals by strengthening GMA’s reputation and relationships.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Leadership

  • Partner with the Co-Managing Directors to develop and implement a communications and marketing strategy
  • Contribute as a member of the leadership team to firm-wide priorities
  • Establish clear processes that support consistent, high-quality communications, outreach, and follow-up
  • Guide GMA’s approach to relationship-driven growth by aligning visibility, outreach, and follow-up to support a steady pipeline of conversations
  • Maintain the firm’s relationship and visibility map, working with colleagues to ensure focus, follow-through, and accountability for outreach and engagement
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for visibility, including speaking engagements, partnerships, and convenings aligned with GMA’s priorities

Brand & Messaging

  • Steward GMA’s brand, including voice, messaging, and visual identity
  • Ensure consistency across client communications, proposals, website content, and external presence
  • Articulate GMA’s value for prospective clients, partners, and peers
  • Write emails and other communications for firm leadership to customize and send
  • Contribute to and coordinate the development of proposals and marketing materials, ensuring clear messaging aligned with GMA’s value proposition and priorities

Content & Channels

  • Lead development of content that engages key audiences and supports growth
  • Establish a more consistent approach to email communications, LinkedIn presence, and event promotion and follow-up
  • Identify opportunities to tell GMA’s story and highlight impact
  • Oversee planning for a future website refresh

Events & Field Engagement

  • Support communications strategy for GMA-hosted events and pooled funds
  • Ensure events are leveraged for visibility, relationship-building, and follow-up
  • Help colleagues turn visibility and relationships into ongoing connection

Team Leadership & Support

  • Guide the communications work of one or two foundation assistants or program associates
  • Provide coaching, tools, and guidance to support effective networking, outreach, and follow-up
  • Build internal capacity for authentic, consistent external presence

Measurement & Improvement

  • Maintain simple systems for tracking contacts, relationships, and outreach activity to support continuity and follow-through
  • Track engagement using practical metrics and use insights to refine approach over time

Qualifications

Background & Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7–10 years of experience in communications, marketing, or related roles; or master’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field, and 4–5 years of relevant experience
  • Experience developing and implementing communications or outreach strategies
  • Experience supporting business development in a relationship-based organization, including writing proposals or other client-facing materials

Preferred

  • Experience in philanthropy, nonprofit consulting, or professional services
  • Experience with brand development or website strategy
  • Experience coaching or mentoring colleagues

Skills & Attributes

Required

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and influence without direct authority
  • Interest in and commitment to the nonprofit and philanthropic sector
  • Commitment to an inclusive culture

Preferred

  • Familiarity with LinkedIn for professional visibility and thought leadership
  • Proficiency with digital communications tools and platforms (e.g., email marketing, CRM, social media)
  • Familiarity with contact and relationship management tools

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range: $63,000—$69,000 for this three-day-per-week position ($105,000-$115,000 full-time equivalent).

GMA is an employee-owned firm offering excellent benefits and a collaborative, mission-driven work environment. Benefits include health, dental, and vision coverage; retirement benefits with employer match; paid time off and volunteer leave; flexible spending accounts; disability and life insurance; and the opportunity to participate in our employee ownership program, subject to eligibility.

Typical work hours are 9am to 5pm, with flexibility in scheduling as appropriate.
