Primary Job Function


The Portfolio Specialist (PS) acts as the investment strategy expert and product champion for assigned Thornburg equity strategies. The PS is the primary product manager for the relevant strategies and serves as a proxy for the Portfolio Managers in all matters related to client service, marketing, and product development. The PS will be well integrated with the investment team, remaining current and informed of deep portfolio-level details.


The Portfolio Specialist is expected to play a lead role in the positioning of his/her strategies, to include being the in-house expert on:


  • The respective category the strategy finds itself in, along with the flow landscape.
  • The strategy performance & volatility and clearly defined narrative.
  • The competitive landscape and key differentiators.
  • The various vehicle types within the strategy itself.
  • The various sales channel (retail, institutional/international, ETFs/SMAs).
  • Our portfolio guidelines and expectations and adherence to risk management guardrails.
  • Current pricing dynamics.
  • Historical perspectives on the strategy and key portfolio nuances.
  • The availability of the portfolio on our key partner platforms.
  • The messaging gameplan and key marketing collateral.
  • Our consultant, investment platform and third-party relationships (i.e. Morningstar, EVestment) for the individual strategies.


The PS works closely with sales, consultant relations, client service and other internal staff to communicate relevant information regarding the assigned investment strategies, including reviewing investment performance, portfolio composition and characteristics, rationale for holdings, investment decisions.


The role is required to be in Santa Fe, NM, with some (<10%) travel expected.


Duties and Responsibilities


The Portfolio Specialist will master and communicate the essential product features, benefits & proof points, investment process, risk management, performance & risk expectations, portfolio fit, attribution analysis and client advantage of TIM and his/her strategies.

  • Oversee periodic review update of marketing collateral and client reporting materials.
  • Produce written market commentary for (monthly, quarterly, ad hoc) dissemination to prospects, clients, and consultants as appropriate.
  • Partner with investment teams to produce and publish research/white papers that demonstrate Thornburg thought leadership, innovation and support our value proposition to the marketplace.
  • Developing the overall product strategy, roadmap, pricing, and commercialization strategy for assigned products, helping provide clearly defined feature vision, scope, and messaging.
  • Collaborate with marketing and sales teams to develop timely and relevant themes to drive awareness and engagement.
  • Engagement and develop the outreach strategy for our relationship with the respective Morningstar analyst.
  • Work closely with sales leadership on participation and materials in sales training and conferences (internal and external).
  • Work with client service team members in to develop and manage RFP language updates.
  • Help with new product initiatives that are adjacent to the investment strategies.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements:
  • CFA or progress towards a CFA designation preferred.
  • 5+ years' experience in the investment management industry. Relevant experience can include portfolio management, investment research, investment consulting, or institutional client service.
  • FINRA Series 7 & 66 required (or equivalent), or ability to obtain within 12-months of start date.
  • Intellectual curiosity, agility, and durability with a high degree of emotional intelligence.
  • Possess strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
