Job description
The Department of Cell Biology at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine invites applications for two tenure-eligible faculty positions on the Academic Investigator (AI) track with preference for early and mid-career investigators. Successful applicants will be expected to build and maintain cutting-edge research programs in mechanistic cell biology and/or developmental biology, and to participate in our graduate and medical school teaching missions.
Investigators in the Department of Cell Biology are using diverse model systems and advanced imaging and genomic approaches to address fundamental questions in cell and developmental biology. Current research strengths and programs focus on morphogenesis at multiple scales (subcellular, cellular, and tissue-level), cytoskeletal dynamics and crosstalk, membrane organelle homeostasis and trafficking, neuronal, cardiovascular and epithelial development, stem cell biology, developmental signaling and genomics, and disease biology - including neural and vascular developmental disorders, cancer and ciliopathies. Candidates working in these and all other areas of cell and developmental biology are encouraged to apply.
Abundant opportunities exist for interdisciplinary and translational research collaborations with other investigators in the Department of Cell Biology, and other basic and clinical departments in the School of Medicine, and more broadly across the University. There are opportunities to interact with researchers in many area-focused centers around the School of Medicine and the University, such as the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center, Cardiovascular Research Center, UVA Brain Institute, Center for Membrane Physiology, Center for Brain Immunology and Glia, and the Manning Biotechnology Institute. Prospective faculty members can draw from an outstanding and diverse pool of graduate and MD/PhD students from the interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences (BIMS) program. Pre- and postdoctoral training is also supported by multiple different NIH T32 training programs.
The Department of Cell Biology strives to build and sustain a supportive community of faculty, trainees and staff. We value a culture of fairness and inclusion and believe this helps make us better scientists and educators.
UVA is recognized as one of the nation's top public Universities and boasts a thriving intellectual community. Charlottesville has been voted one of the best places to live in the US and one of America's Top Green Cities, with a vibrant art, music, culinary and craft beverage scene, pristine natural beauty and small-town charm. Its central location in Virginia enables easy access to the Blue Ridge mountains, Atlantic coastal region, and the cities of Washington, DC, and Richmond.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates will hold Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degrees, have completed several years of postdoctoral training, and can demonstrate a track record of exceptional research accomplishments. Potential for directing innovative, independent research programs supported with sustained extramural funding will be a key consideration in candidate selection.
Application Instructions
. Complete an application online and attach the following required documents:
• Cover letter highlighting research focus and fit (1 page)
• CV
• Research statement (2 pages)
• Contact information for three references (name, email address, telephone number, address).
• A statement (500 words or less) describing any past experience, efforts as well as future plans and interests in teaching and service.
Successful candidates will pass criminal background checks. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until December 31, 2026.
For additional information regarding the position, please contact the search committee chair Dr. Elias Spiliotis, Professor of Cell Biology. For further information regarding the application process, please contact Margaret Weeks, Academic Recruiter.
