What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Glass Manufacturing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Glass Manufacturing Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, mechanical engineering, and process optimization, often supported by a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software, process control systems, and Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certifications is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications ensure efficient production, high product quality, and continuous improvement in the glass manufacturing process.

What are some common challenges faced by Glass Manufacturing Engineers in optimizing production processes?

Glass Manufacturing Engineers often encounter challenges related to maintaining product quality while improving efficiency and reducing waste. Balancing the strict temperature and compositional controls required for glass production with the need for cost-effective, high-speed processes can be complex. Additionally, engineers must frequently troubleshoot equipment and address issues such as furnace wear, raw material inconsistencies, and environmental compliance. Collaboration with maintenance, quality assurance, and production teams is essential to implement effective process improvements.

What does a Glass Manufacturing Engineer do?

A Glass Manufacturing Engineer designs, develops, and oversees processes for producing glass products. They work on optimizing production lines, improving product quality, and ensuring safety standards in facilities that make glass for various uses, such as windows, bottles, or electronics. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting equipment, implementing new technologies, and collaborating with other engineers to make manufacturing more efficient and sustainable. They also play a key role in reducing costs and environmental impacts associated with glass production.

What is the difference between Glass Manufacturing Engineer vs Glass Process Engineer?

AspectGlass Manufacturing EngineerGlass Process Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, materials science, or related field; certifications like Six Sigma often preferredBachelor's in Engineering, materials science, or related field; process improvement certifications beneficial
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, labs, design facilitiesProduction lines, process development areas, quality control labs
Industry UsageDesigning, developing, and improving glass manufacturing processesOptimizing existing glass production processes, troubleshooting, and process control

Both roles focus on glass production but differ in scope. Glass Manufacturing Engineers typically oversee the entire manufacturing process, while Glass Process Engineers concentrate on process optimization and troubleshooting within existing systems. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description

AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices based on our extensive IP and patent portfolio and designed for both commercial and government applications. Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today's five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected.

Position Summary:

The Lead Manufacturing Engineer / Manufacturing Engineering Manager will oversee and optimize manufacturing processes for the Cover Glass Integrated Solar Cell (CIC) production line. This role focuses on improving yield, throughput, process reliability, and equipment efficiency and managing production line personnel. This position will lead cross-functional teams, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process Development & Optimization:
    • Lead development, qualification, and scaling of processes for cover glass lamination, laser cutting, interconnect integration, and solar cell encapsulation.
    • Implement Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles for new product introductions (NPI).
    • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for process deviations and yield loss.
  • Production Support:
    • Provide hands-on technical support to resolve day-to-day production issues across the CGISC line.
    • Maintain and improve key process parameters (KPPs) to ensure consistent quality and throughput.
    • Lead troubleshooting and failure analysis of mechanical and process equipment.
  • Equipment & Tooling:
    • Specify, procure, and qualify production equipment and fixtures.
    • Collaborate with equipment vendors for installation, calibration, and maintenance strategies.
  • Leadership & Collaboration:
