What is a GIS planner?

A GIS Planner is a professional who uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze spatial data and support urban planning, environmental management, transportation, and other projects. They create maps, interpret geographic data, and assist in decision-making processes by visualizing trends and patterns. GIS Planners work with government agencies, private firms, and nonprofit organizations to develop plans for land use, infrastructure, and natural resource management. Their role often involves collaborating with planners, engineers, and policymakers to ensure sustainable and efficient development.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a GIS planner?

A GIS Planner typically spends their day gathering, analyzing, and interpreting spatial data to support urban or environmental planning initiatives. This involves creating maps and visual reports, collaborating with planning teams, and attending meetings with stakeholders or governmental agencies. You may also be tasked with maintaining and updating GIS databases, conducting fieldwork, and presenting findings to decision-makers. These responsibilities require attention to detail and a strong ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences. As a result, each day brings a mix of independent analysis and teamwork to tackle complex real-world planning challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the GIS planner position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a GIS Planner, you need a background in geography, urban planning, or a related field, coupled with strong spatial analysis and cartography skills. Familiarity with GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and proficiency in data management and mapping are critical, and certifications like GISP can provide an edge. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and project management abilities help you coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These competencies ensure you can effectively analyze geographic data, support planning decisions, and contribute to successful project outcomes.

Is GIS planner still in demand?

GIS planners are in demand due to the increasing reliance on geographic information systems for urban planning, environmental management, and infrastructure development. The role requires proficiency with GIS software like ArcGIS or QGIS and often benefits from relevant certifications, with job growth expected to continue as spatial data analysis becomes more integral across industries.

  • Coordinating special projects related to GIS governance, organizational standards, and workforce initiatives
  • Assisting with the development of governance frameworks that improve consistency, accountability, and long-term sustainability of enterprise GIS data assets

What you will bring to our firm:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Information Technology, or a related field
  • Minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience leading GIS data management or GIS governance initiatives
  • Strong understanding of GIS principles, enterprise GIS environments, and spatial data management

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Experience developing workflows, governance documentation, and process improvements
What we prefer you bring:
