Job Description

Gilead Sciences is seeking a highly motivated Associate Scientist to join the Discovery Virology department, supporting research programs focused on respiratory viruses. This role will contribute to antiviral discovery through the execution of cellbased virology assays and additional experimental studies that advance earlystage drug discovery and preclinical research. The successful candidate will work closely with both senior and junior scientists in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, execute, and analyze in vitro virology assays to support antiviral discovery programs utilizing either small-molecules or biologics approaches to target respiratory viruses.

  • Plan and execute experiments in alignment with project goals and research timelines.

  • Analyze and interpret experimental data, proactively troubleshooting technical challenges and recommending solutions based on experimental outcomes and literature.

  • Select and apply appropriate experimental methods, techniques, and controls for routine virology studies.

  • Propagate and work with respiratory viruses in cell culture systems under appropriate biosafety conditions.

  • Collaborate closely with scientists across multiple functional areas to advance project and research goals.

  • Participate in crossfunctional project and group meetings, presenting experimental data and conclusions clearly and concisely.

  • Maintain accurate experimental records and ensure data quality and integrity in accordance with Gilead standards.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related scientific discipline (e.g., Virology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology) with 4+ years of relevant laboratory experience, OR

  • Master's degree in related scientific discipline with 2+ years of relevant laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Handson experience with respiratory viruses.
  • Experience with primary cell culture and virus infection assays.

  • Familiarity with evaluation of compound/biologic potency and cytotoxicity.

  • Experience working in a BSL2+ laboratory environment.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple experiments simultaneously.

  • Motivated to learn, troubleshoot, and grow scientifically in a teamoriented research environment.


The salary range for this position is: $109,650.00 - $141,900.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
